IF YOU EDIT HOSTS FILE, SPOTIFY DESKTOP WILL NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY

Casual Listener

If you edit the HOSTS file in an attempt to block ads by adding lines that include the phrase "spotify" in it, do NOT be supriseed if your Spotify desktop is not playing all songs that aren't in your library or in your playlists. You need to remove all lines from your HOSTS file that are blocking spotify.  You can find out how to do that here:

Hey @KMOX4

You are supposed to remove the line with Spotify in it.

For example you have the following lines in your hosts:

0.0.0.0 akaimd.com
0.0.0.0 fbcdn.net
0.0.0.0 spclient.wg.spotify.com
0.0.0.0 virus.com

Then you have to remove the entire line Spotify line, so you are left with

0.0.0.0 akaimd.com
0.0.0.0 fbcdn.com
0.0.0.0 virus.com

Spotify should work then. You can remove all lines too. 🙂

Note: you might see 127.0.0.1 instead of 0.0.0.0, it will cause the same issue, so just remove Spotify lines, save the changes and restart Spotify

Hope this helps!

That's interesting!

I would just in case try commenting out these remaining lines (add a # in front of each line, like you see in the text block above) and see if anything changes.

If not, you can remove the # you added and I'd suggest checking if your antivirus software might be doing some filtering. 🙂

Let me know!

Thank you,  thank you, thank you!!! Literally have been messaging spotify on twitter for the past two days and they haven't been helpful at all. All I had to do was go into my hosts file on my mac and add a # in front of any line that had the word "spotify" in it and boom it worked. You are braver than the US marines, thank you for your service!

It won't function properly because you are using the newest version, of course they patched it, lol.

If you really want to adblock, at least use a proper version, 1.0.80 or lower. They are available for Windows very easily, but you need to know how to stop updates. I once made a tutorial about that, not a long while ago, for both Windows and Linux, how to block ads in Spotify without limiting functionality.
