On specific laptop, spotify does not play.

Premium account. Netherlands. Samsung laptop. Windows 8.

I was using it on my Samsung laptop, but now it simply do not play the songs. 

It works and it recognizes if I change the device  (i.e. from phone to chromecast) but it does not play any song. Time bar does not move.

It was working yesterday. I was always using the desktop app and then I tried web app and then suddenly both stopped working.

I CAN use Spotify on my android phone, on my windows 7 dell laptop, on chromecast. 

I have another free account, it does not play anything either on samsung laptop.

Windows Media Player and Youtube on Chrome works so i guess sound is fine on my laptop.

I uninstalled Spotify, used CCleaner, checked the folder of Spotify in my AppData folder ( it does not exists after uninstall, which is good). I both opened my chrome & firefox and cleaned spotify site data & cookies, restarted computer, reinstall Spotify. Nope.... it does not play any song. The app starts, everything works fine, it plays local mp3's on my computer but it simply stopped playing online songs. No firewall or anything changed. Using only windows defender.  I also tried randomly changing sources. Nope. 

Is there anything i have not tried to make my computer forget Spotify?

There is one more thing that might be causing this issue, it's with the hosts file.

Some adblockers or other apps may edit the file to enhance blocking ads (or security), but they can also wreck apps and websites by adding addresses that are important for the functionality.

You just need admin rights to save changes - read this on how to proceed. 🙂

Thank you Sebasty! Some app somehow added 0.0.0.0 spclient.wg.spotify.com to my host file! Deleted that line now everything works fine.

But who? I searched for it on the internet they say ezblocker may add it but i have never used it. I wish windows has a history manager.

EZblocker was made specifically for blocking Spotify ads and it used the hosts file for this, but it seems there are other apps / plugins that also do that (not specifically for Spotify).

It makes sense to use hosts for security. It's not possible to bypass that unless you use vpn, and it's a very efficient and low-resource way to make sure the potentially bad traffic won't reach the PC. There are long lists of various addresses compiled by experts for use in the hosts... Some are for ads, others for porn and some for malware.

So some apps may do that for same reasons and accidentally kill Spotify. 🙂
