Shuffle only plays a few artists at a time

I often like to listen to my music on shuffle when I'm not entirely sure what I feel like listening to, it helps me decide. However, Spotify's shuffle algorithm is so frustrating because it only plays a handfull of artists at a time. For example, I just started shuffle play on all of my songs, and have skipped through 50+ songs, all of which have been by the same 5 artists which happen to be the first 5 artists in my library. I have 2,665 songs saved, there is no reason spotify should be playing only the first 5 artists.
