My Question or Issue

Spotify has been suddenly doing this strange thing where a song will begin to play and stop after a few seconds (typically at the 6-second mark). If I try to play it again, it will refuse to play any of the song at all. Other songs will not load and play at all.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Spotify several times. I've reset my computer several times. I've gone into Spotify's files and deleted certain ones I think may be causing the issue. Nothing has solved it yet, and it's been going on for about a week.

I am at a complete loss here and need some help. 😞

Like Topsu101 said, need to get an older version.  I had to go back to 1.13 as 1.15 and 1.14 also stopped playing after 6 seconds.

Yep this fixed it for me, but i wouldn't recommend if your not sure what your doing.

Why has no Spotify employee been able to resolve this utter nonsense? I have had this problem for at least a couple of years. I have premium: Works on phone - Only works for 6 seconds on Mac desktop (OS Mojave) ... then the blue error message (cannot play song). Go back into daily playlists and most songs are greyed out - Spotify have cheekily claimed this has something to do with copyright or downloads - we all know this is a total lie.

By the way - I've exhausted every option suggested on this site, blogs ... etc. I've lost count of the number of times I've downloaded and reinstalled, cleared cache, created a twitter profile to get an actual answer from Spotify, updated my mac .... absolutely no improvement whatsoever.

What a bunch of twats they are.  You'll also need to disable the auto update by doing what is suggested at the following link https://snew.notabug.io/r/spotify/comments/alw999/new_spotify_update_blocking_method/

SPOTIFY is the "**bleep**" in all this! I cancelled my Premium account the
beginning of this month. There is no way I am PAYING for a service that is
so non-functional that it is ridiculous, and then to add insult to injury
there appears to be no way to actually contact any kind of tech service for
assistance, at least not directly (and I am sure that is intentional). I
guess I'll see come 1 June how many commercials you have to listen to with
the free service. If it ends up being more commercials than music, I'll
just stop using Spotify altogether and stick with Pandora as far as
streaming services go. It's really a shame because the one good thing I can
say about Spotify is that the music selection they offer is pretty good, at
least for my musical taste.

I installed one of the earlier desktop versions a couple of weeks ago, and
it still seems to be working fine (not the one recommended in this thread,
but a version actually from about 6 months ago which is around the time I
started subscribing to the Premium service). I just ignore the little blue
update dot on the drop-down menu.

Can you tell which version you are using? I'm kinda annoyed about this. I was considering getting Premium but this just ruins it for me.

Hey all

It might be wise to start a thread in the Ongoing Issues board here:

Hi Veeru153,

The version I am now using successfully is 1.0.98.78.gb45d2a6b. I initially
tried the version originally recommended in this thread and had log-in
problems with it for some reason, so I decided to wipe all things Spotify
off my computer (yet again) and try one more version. I just selected this
version basically at random and I guess because it was from about the same
time I decided to subscribe to the Premium service. You need to remember to
delete all Spotify files from your computer and not just "un-install" the
current program/app. Just doing the un-install alone will still leave old
Spotify files on your computer. After you install the older version, you
will eventually see the 'blue dot' prompt on the drop-down menu to let you
know there is an update available - you just need to ignore this prompt and
do NOT click on the update!

Hope this helps.

Well, I guess my luck ran out after a couple of weeks. Even though I never clicked on the update link after the 'blue dot' update notification appeared, for some reason the darn thing did go on and update itself this morning when I clicked on the Spotify desktop icon. I then tried the suggestion for turning off the auto-update, but do not know if that is going to work as the initial command was not recognized - said "rm" (I assume stands for 'remove') was not a recognizable commend or something to that affect. I went on and typed in the other 3 commands and they all appeared to be accepted, so we'll see. The desktop app is continuing to work after the update, so I'll let it go as long as it is working. But if it does like it normally does, it will stop working in a day or two and I will have to start over by reinstalling the old version again and hope the commands to turn off auto-update work. srt

I love you

I love you too bro/babes.

I've given up.  I'm moving to another streaming service.  You suck Spotify

I'm having same problem here spotify just dont work anywhere i press play and after a fews seconds if not instantly the music stop!

Hi Marcrake,

Don't waste your time, and definitely do not waste your money on Spotify,
because whatever platform they are using is non-functional, and there is no
fix/solution unless one has recently been identified. I tried for several
months as a paying customer (Premium account). And to add insult to injury
- they do NOT provide any technical support whatsoever, even to paying
customers.

Unless you want to continuously re-install software, your only solution is
to use a different music streaming service such as Pandora.

Worked. Thank you.

I have donw this and have uninstalled and reinstalled spotify several times and after playing for like 20 minutes it starts happening again.  Does Spotify even look at these posts?  Do they care?

It works for me. Im using Debian 9. Edit the hosts in the terminal:

sudo nano /etc/hosts

There isn't a bug fix for this that doesn't involve going into the system admin settings? Is Spotify not going to try and fix this on their end?

What file do I open? I don't see a file called host or anything, they just seem to have random names.
