My Question or Issue

Spotify has stopped playing music that isn't already added to my playlist. For example: I can no longer go to an artist's page and play to the top track unless that track is already saved in a playlist or in my library. A reinstallation of spotify will fix this, but only until I restart my computer, after which the problem arises again. I am running spotify version 1.0.99.250

Hey @Jwatt

I recommend checking your hosts file for any Spotify-related entries.
The file is capable of redirecting traffic for addresses it contains, so it can break Spotify app when it contains Spotify addresses.

It's easy to check and edit, you'll need admin rights:

1. open Notepad as an administrator (right-click - Open as Administrator)
2. go to File - Open and navigate to

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

3. Choose "All Files" instead of "Text Documents" next to the File Name box. You'll see a handful of files. Pick hosts and click on Open.
4. The file is opened. You will see a block of text with # in front of each line and might see entries like

0.0.0.0 website.com
127.0.0.1 website2.com

Check for any entries with spotify or fastly in the address. Examples may look like:

0.0.0.0 weblb-wg.gslb.spotify.com
0.0.0.0 prod.b.ssl.us-eu.fastlylb.net

(and any variations inbetween)
5. If you do find any, you can delete the line. You can also add a # in front of the line, that's 'commenting out'.
6. Save your changes. Restart Spotify.

You can also try removing all lines to see what happens.

Let me know how it goes 🙂

Thanks ! It worked for me 🙂

I also commented the line :  #0.0.0.0 spclient.wg.spotify.com

After some days that I upgraded my account to premium, Spotify stopped playing most songs. On Android there's no bug.

On Windows 10, I fix this "songs-not-playing bug" by deleting the cache folder C\users\username\appdata\local\spotify

But everytime I restart the app or restart windows (not sure) the bug arises again

Maybe it's about some premium settings I changed?

I was trying your solution but I cant find any file named "hosts" inside that folder 😞

searched for all kind of files and enabled "hidden files view"

Any help would be greatly appreciated, it's very annoying having to delete your cache everytime!

Thanks 🙂

PS: I just noticed that I can play all the songs saved offline in my favourites

If only Spotify's staff was half as helpful as you.

It's fixed, thank you Sebasty.

@Powagherry

You can try typing hosts in the file name field and click Open in Notepad. Does that open anything for you? 🙂

I'd recommend making sure your antivirus or firewall is not blocking Spotify. You can also try if the web player works.

Let me know how you get on!

Didnt work for me.

this worked! thank you so much ♥

Hey @KMOX4

Are you having this issue in a workplace or school? It's possible that corporate and school networks might filter out some Spotify traffic.

I'd also make sure your own antivirus or firewall is not blocking anything. You can also try restarting the router.

Was your hosts file empty?

I'm on windows 7 and it won't let me save the hosts file. I don't have the option to open as a administrator. Does anyone know what i can do? thank you

No. But i cloudnt run notepad as adminstor secondley im at home for this.

Hey @alina9797

Do you have access to the administrator account (or know the credentials)?

If yes,  try this:

Press shift-key whilst right-clicking on Notepad. Do you see that menu option there?

Let me know. 🙂

Your solution fixed multiple problems I was having with spotify, and I can't thank you enough!

Not only did it fix this problem, it fixed my Friends Activity feed as well, which hadn't worked for months now. Thank you!! 🙂
