My Question or Issue
When I try to play a song I get the following error message "Spotify can't play this right now. If you have the file on your computer you can import it"
I have tried all the fixes I have seen:
Reinstalling app.
Using version from Microsoft store.
Disabled hardware acceleration.
Disabled crossfading.
Changed speaker options.
Deleted local files.
I've had this issue before and it was fixed by using the version from the Microsoft store but this isn't working now.
Spotify works on my phone and my laptop, web player also works only the desktop app doesn't work.

Hey folks,
Thank you all for posting about this in the Community.
If you're seeing this error message, here are a few things you can try:
If that doesn't help, please let us know the following so we can investigate further:
If possible, send over a short video of the behavior.
Thanks for your help, we'll be on the lookout for your replies!
I don't have a video but I have a photo of what appears
Using https://open.spotify.com/ that is the Webplayer.using Chrome
Windows PC - Pick a song from the start of an album - skips 4 songs then starts playing the 5th, sound is heard until 9 second then sound stops but the song appears to be still playing but if you try and pause and then play it won't start playing and seems frozen. Tried everything suggested, Edge, MS IE, hotspotting to my iphone for a different network / ip address. Nothing works.
Today I tried on a MacBook Air, with the exact same results. Skip 4 songs start the 5th and then silence after 9 seconds.
In both cases sound comes from built in speakers and is working for other applications i.e. YouTube etc
Works fine on my iPhone.
So it's Windows and Mac, Chrome, Edge, MS IE at least.
Thanks.
Correction, skips 5 songs and starts playing the 6th.
Happens in playlists, full albums, popular releases for an artist and even the DJ Beta.
Tried connecting to my BOSE Quite Comfort 2 earbuds instead of interanl speakers. Same thing.
Note: When using DJ the dude talks but as soon as it goes to play music it just skips 5 songs back to the DJ ho talks again then a song starts but goes silent after 9 seconds
Hello, same here, it skips 4 o 5 songs with that error message and then plays the next one, for the first 10 seconds aprox.
I normally use Linux Mint and Firefox 128. On the same laptop I have Windows 10 and FF 131, and Spotify web player works ok there.
I hope it will be fixed soon as I don't want to switch to Windows just for this xD
EDIT: I tried updating FF to 132 and nothing changed.
I was looking at my previous messages here, some years ago jaja, and it reminded me that I had a similar issue before. At that time responsible for the error was the Widevine plugin, and the solution was just updating it. But in this case the plugin is already updated, though I think it may be related to the error. I will keep investigating.
Here is the message I was talking about.
EDIT2: Well after looking into the FF's devtools, realizing about an HTTP error and googling that error, I found this post with a solution for that kind of problems. I did it and it solved my problem! Hope it helps others.
Thanks to @axbkbsf76repwsk
Regards.
Unfortunately, still the same problem in Chrome and FF.
Juanpr87, can you please specify the version of the plugin that worked for you. My is 4.10.2710.0 and FF doesn't update to a newer one. I have the same skipping-5-songs-playing-9-seconds problem like many users since the beginning of November and dev tools report a Widevine error.
Hello, the version that worked is 4.10.2830.0. It seems FF doesn't realize there is a new version.
I did these steps and doing so I could force FF to update it. It means: disable the DRM plugin from the FF plugins list and disable the setting "Play DRM content" from the FF settings. Then open the Spotify web player, the browser will show the message that "you must enable DRM...", click on enable button and FF will start downloading the mentioned version... that worked for me.
Good luck and regards.
Thanks a lot, juanpr87! I already did all those steps, but FF downloaded the old version again. I guess the problem is that i have Debian and its 115.14.0esr version of Firefox doesnt "have" the new plugin yet.
Well, yes you might need to update FF.
There is a Mozilla webpage to do so.
It's also explained on the Debian wiki (which redirects to the previous link).
I can't believe how complicated is to just be able to use a service most of us pay for jaja.
Regards.
I installed Firefox 132. It came with the 4.10.2830.0 Widevine CDM plugin and now Spotify works. So it seems that the old plugin (version 4.10.2710.0) isn't supported any more.
There is another new topic about this issue : Songs stops playing after 9 seconds (Browser) , so would you be kind to post your solution there too. I was lucky enough to find your post here, but maybe others won't. Thank you once more, you saved the day. 🙂
You are welcome! It's great to read that it's worked!
Yes of course I will, no problem.
Regards!
With browser FF actual Version: 4.10.2830.100 it already works, but with Chrome even the current version has the same problem.
Anyway, thank you.
After way to much time of trying to resolve this, I found a solution that I haven't really seen in this thread until now.
I had the same issue with the desktop app and what resolved it for was to go to the Windows Settings, serach for Optional Features - View Features and search for Media Feature Pack. Install the Pack, restart your PC and this should work.
If not, even if this solution is related to the GPU directly, you can also try to update your video codec with the K-Lite Codec Pack.
Hope this helps.
