Why won't Spotify import my playlist?

I have a folder of music on my laptop that I've had for years. I learned that you can upload the music folders on your laptop into playlists on Spotify through the desktop app version of Spotify by using local files. I tried that and the songs won't play on the website version of Spotify (Firefox). Did I do something wrong? Is it supposed to upload? Does it take a while for SPotify to scan thre playlist and match whatever songs in the playlist are on Spotify? Just tryna figure it out. Thanks for any help :).
