This is strange. I thought it would be the firewall problem but I have made Spotify an exception and have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail. My friend also has Spotify on his laptop and I managed to log in fine on that. Any ideas?

Hmm ok. Error 101 would nearly always suggest an issue with the firewall. Have you tried all the steps mentioned here? http://www.spotify.com/help/faq/error/error-101-12
I know you mentioned that you've disabled the firewall, but I need to outline these steps. If you could give them a try.
