Hey! Welcome to the community :)
The new client (v0.8.8) brought in changes to how the Activity feed works. Now, instead of getting a feed of what all your Facebook friends are listening to, you get a feed from whichever People, Artists or Playlists you Follow. This new feed includes what people are listening to, updates to playlists, and notifications about new content.
You can manage who you are following from the new Follow tab which will be on the left hand menu in the client. You can follow any person, artist or playlist by pressing the "Follow" button on the respective pages.

I, along with a lot of people, are really unhappy with this change. Spotify should at least give you a choice about who to follow -- or not follow. There are a hand full of people whose music activity I don't care to see, but I don't want to "follow" all of my friends on Facebook. It just seems silly and like a needless duplicative step.

The old way the activity feed worked was much better. I was able to keep track of what my top friends were listening to, not have to sift through a feed to find them. Also, the pictures are gone, so it's harder at a glance to pick out a friend.
It was nice to have the two seperate feeds. One for all my close friends, and I could always see what they were listening to, what they listened to last, or if they weren't listening to anything. I can't do that anymore.
I also liked having my facebook friends populate the lower feed. That way I could see if any thing in there caught my eye.
This new way does not work as well, and that was a feature I really liked about Spotify.

I agree with this. I liked the old activity feed much more. Before I was able to seperate my top friends, but still see what all my other facebook friends were listening to. This was nice because there were people I may not have wanted to seperate out as my "top friends" but that doesn't mean that I didn't occasionally learn a new artist or song from one of my other facebook friends. Perhaps instead of having to physically select every friend you want to see in your feed, you could just remove the ones that you don't want to see (if there are any).

The new activity feed is super disappointing. I loved being able to see what all of my friends were listening to without manually following each person.

Spotify wake up:
Very, very, VERY bad change to the activity feed!
The old way served a very important purpose, which was to see what friendt were listening to and thereby get new ideas and inspiration what to listen to!

Agreed, this reduces the ability to discover new music. I also like the differentiation between favorites and the ability to see music that was on rotation in my friends' general zeitgeist. Not sure why the change, must be a commercial reason? It's a bummer.
