[Mobile] [Other] Smart Shuffle toggle setting in settings menu

Smart shuffle is a fun way to discover new songs, but it comes at a cost. Want to reshuffle your queue? Bam, wait a few seconds longer. Want to unshuffle your playlist? Bam, no longer works, and goes to a completely random place in the playlist.

To me this is an unwanted complication, and I'd much rather be able to choose in the settings menu whether I want to enable the Smart Shuffle feature, or disable it.

Updated on 2025-04-29

Hey folks,

We're excited to announce that you can now toggle whether Smart Shuffle is available on your mobile apps!

  1. Tap your profile picture at the top.
  2. Tap Settings and privacy.
  3. Select Playback.
  4. Switch Enable all play modes off and you're good to go!

Cheers & many thanks for your input 🙂 Stay tuned for new updates 🙌🏼

Okay, so I found [un-]”Smart” Shuffle annoying before, but at least it was the last of three options when considering playlist order. Now it comes before regular shuffle?? *many expletives*

To The Powers that Be at Spotify:

Listen, I get that ads/band promotions are a very great part of your profit. However, it is in this humble reviewer’s opinion — as a long-time premium member — that Smart Shuffle, ads for upcoming concerts, etc. should be opt-in only, for at least paying subscribers, if not all users.

Honestly, I’d be willing to pay another dollar or two a month if that was what it took to get rid of Stupid Shuffle.

Also, you already have “song suggestions” auto-play at the end of a playlist, so Silly Scramble feels both redundant and excessive.

Sincerely,

Your Friendly Neighborhood Jenn

Smart shuffle will turn itself on constantly, especially when skipping songs. It shouldn't even exist in the first place, please entirely remove this**bleep** feature or at least let us permanently disable it in the settings

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. NOBODY WANTS THIS! NOBODY EVER ASKED FOR THIS. DITCH THIS ASAP!

Don't limit this to mobile 🙏 Smart shuffle by default is equally annoying on desktop

I create playlists to organize music. I don't want playlist to get populated with "smart" suggestions. When I select "shuffle" on a playlist, I want to shuffle just the songs in the playlist. You can keep smart suggestions, just don't mix them with **shuffling**. This is confusing UX, just add a separate button, or let me change the default via global settings.

I've been a premium member for years and this is the first time I've considered ending my subscription. Is there any indication they're actually going to let us permanently toggle this awful feature off?

if it can also be implemented to the desktop client, that would be amazing.

Another cancellation due to Smart Shuffle. So long, Spotify Premium Family plan. I downgraded to the Spotify Basic Family plan to avoid the recent price hike, but only a complete cancellation will communicate to Spotify just how important it is to give paying customers a choice to completely disable Smart Shuffle. Anything less is unacceptable.

Creating a playlist, is a personal project—selecting, curating and then sharing a playlist is a VERY personal project. I don't mind sharing that I put some measure of love and care into mine. I DO NOT WANT Spotify ALGORITHMS forcibly overriding my playlists, I DO NOT WANT this bug/feature set to 'on' by default. I DO NOT want to be forced to panic-tap, while riding/driving, in a vain attempt to turn this feature off, inevitably missing what the 'off' state looks like and then being forced to listen to music I DO NOT WANT IN MY PERSONALLY CURATED PLAYLISTS.STAY OUT OF MY PERSONAL PLAYLISTS, unless I ask you to screw them up with your junk reccos.

**bleep** feature, remove it
