[Music] Local FLAC Playback

A member of spotify team said to separate the FLAC idea post, into FLAC local playback and FLAC streaming. Someone else can create a FLAC streaming post, as I'm only after local playback. The original post with the 2 ideas in one post is here.

Vote for this post if you want LOCAL PLAYBACK OF FLAC FILES ONLY.

WHY WE NEED SPOTIFY TO PLAY OUR FLAC COLLECTION
Spotify already plays ALAC, all be it with stability problems, but what we really need is local FLAC playback because FLAC is the defacto standard for lossless audio encoding. 7digital has recently started selling FLAC yet spotify can't play them. Why not???

The most commercially successful band on the planet (The Beatles), have released official remastered versions of all albums in 24bitFLAC format on a usb device.

Numerous bands have sold albums in FLAC format through their websites. FLAC is the defacto standard for lossless encoding, so please start supporting local playback of FLAC.

Another idea that is important to me is fixing the appalling "set the same volume level for all tracks", which doesn't take into account the subtle volume transients of an album that audio engineers spend hours working on. The following volume normalization method retains the intended volume differences as part of the album.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for coming to the Ideas Exchange and sharing your feedback.

We're happy to inform you that this is now possible, so you can enjoy your local FLAC files through Spotify! Make sure to add them to Your Library, if you haven't already.

Thanks again for making Spotify better!

Hey All,

I grew up in a different "sound playback" era. When I was in high school CDs and players came out.  Then they dramatically improved and the prices dropped.  And they have consistently improved.  Arguments waged over vinyl, and even drove better vinyl records and recording standards.  People literally tweaked everything.

Now, people go for ease of access to music. That is fine. I understand it.  I never went in for it, because I didn't see the need for it.

But there is a huge market out there that is being ignored by the largest providers of recorded music, and once tapped, the flood gates will open to that provider.  A lot of the people who purchased lossy music might upgrade if they can hear the difference.  The entire audio and stereophile market may shine again.

Most if not all of the music magazines would discuss FLAC streaming support on Spotify.  Millions of FREE dollars of advertizing would be given by word of mouth.  While Apple has introduced ALAC, they did so and divided the community.  They are greedy, inept, ignorant.

I'll join the first major streaming service that streams FLAC.  Millions of others will too.  Until then.  I'm out.

Please add local flac support. I use spotify as my one stop music playback software (don't even use itunes or wmp anymore), and the fact that it can't play flac is seriously annoying. Any serious playback software should be able to play a wide range of formats...

Would love to have local FLAC playability...only reason why Spotify is not my main music player. Streaming works a charm, interface and search is very useable but the missing FLAC capability means half my library is missing! I hope the feature comes soon! 😃

I agree, the only reason Spotify isn't my default player is because it won't play my local flac files. The lossless streaming would be neat, but in truth, I only want the local flac support. 80-90% of my local music library isn't accessible through Spotify and that just doesn't work for me. So please, please add local flac file support.

I have premium and for me FLAC playback on desktop app and Adroid app is MUST HAVE. Especially Android supports FLAC natively.... Don't understand how You could ommit this basic functionality!!!

mfw 2 years later there is still no flac support

"At the moment, flac is still a relatively uncommon format"

Really? You want to try that again?

I have 1,629 FLAC files that are unplayable in Spotify thanks to this oversight. This is something we as the community really want. This isn't some major undertaking to add support. This is a relatively simple feature to implement. I may have just started with Spotify recently but seeing this thread, which was posted over two years ago now (and sixteen pages of replies), get simply passed off as unimportant based on the unfair assumption that it's "uncommon" is infuriating.

For the past few months I really haven't been using Spotify at all due to missing FLAC support. I've got several thousand FLAC files and have been using Foobar2000, but I thought this week that hey, maybe I can give Spotify another go to mix up my collection a bit with the online library. But still no FLAC support. This feature has been missing since 2008! Almost 7 years now. Get a grip Spotify! darn.

Deezer just announced High Resolution Audio Support for Sonos.  I am now thinking of switching
