[Playlists] Only selected Playlist Authors for Collaborative Playlist

Recently, me and a few friends have started to get this kick ass playlist together of the music we all share and like. Obviously Spotify is the best way to do this. However, a playlist can only be managed by one single user.

Wouldn't it be a great idea that the 'founder' of the playlist can assign co-authors?

Would love to hear the feedback!

Hey everyone,

We're happy to announce that you will soon have new options for managing collaborative playlists - they are rolling out to everyone over the coming weeks.

Users will have the ability to review who currently has access to individual playlists, share collaborative playlists with large public groups, or keep them small and private for that special tightly-knit group of friends.

You will be able to:
  • Pick your favorites. As a playlist creator, you can now invite or remove users from collaborating on your playlists, meaning there’s more control over who has access to editing the content you love.
  • Share privately. You can now set your collaborative playlists to private, so no one can view, search, listen to or share a playlist– except for those chosen few who have been invited or given collaborative access.
  • Change your mind? At any given time, a playlist owner has the power to see, add and remove who gets to collaborate and follow their playlists.
For details on how the feature works, see:

Because of this change, this other idea is also being implemented.

If you don't see this yet, don't worry. Just make sure to keep your app up to date and it should be available for you soon.

Thanks for giving us your feedback in the Community.

I was going to suggest this myself. I think it's a great idea and I would like to be able to create a curated group of friends which are able to add/remove music from a playlist I have started.

The collaborative Playlist would include the options:

  • The ability to select which users have add/remove privilages
  • The ability to add weight / strength / star rating (for the curators of the playlist) so eventually songs can be weeded out if enough people think the song is bad.
  • An event log of songs added / removed from the playlist so curators can review new music in an unordered playlist.

I think this would be very helpful as I could have different groups of friends curating a playlist that we would all like to hear. Not only that, this would work very well in a studio environment. I work with designers / devs all day, and we constantly joke about how bad certain music is on a playlist. Having the ability to add studio members to the playlist would mean we could all have a say on what is being played!

Making playlists collaborative for strangers only kills the playlist. It seems obvious that people will want to share playlists with their own selected people and not have random people add songs you don’t like to the list!

This needs to happen. 5 years since the OP suggested it. Collaborative playlists open that playlist up for anyone with a link to start editing it. Being able to select specific "editors" of a playlist will prevent random users accessing, editing and worst case, deleting tracks.

vikaschinnan - if Spotify had something like this (but clearly better UI), I would pay $100/year for it!

I was just about to suggest this! It would definitely be a great feature for Spotify. Imagine how awesome it would be to build the ultimate dream playlist with your selection of friend(s) or significant other in a single music platform. Not to mention, it'd be a lovely way to interact, keep-in-touch, and bond with those who are far away and/or with those who have similar music tastes as you do! Such a simple feature. It could be done privately or publicly. Having that "closed" (exclusively seen/played by the selected authors), "secret" (exclusively seen/played by selected authors and by link invite), and "open" (publicly seen/played by all, if playlist is in public mode) feature/function similar to Facebook's group types.

This post is from 2012 and is still relevant! We need private collaberation!!!!

Das ist exakt mein Anliegen;

waere es moeglich als "Verwalter" der Playlist andere Benutzer rechte zu erteilen um Songs in bestimmte Playlisten hinzuzufuegen?

Achso, ae oe und ue waeren fuer die deutsche Sprache auch hilfreich xD

Danke + Gruss

I do not like the idea of a collaborative playlist with all your followers since anyone can add to it, even the people you don't want to. I would just like to collaborate a playlist with one of my friends since we mix together and want to have a similar playlist and sharing every individual song with one another take too much time...

It really is bizarre to me that this isn't implemented yet. It is such an obviously beneficial idea. It comes up for me nearly everyday. It would significantly increase my engagement with spotify and open up entirely new ways of using the service for a lot of people. Imagine a car trip with a shared playlist where everyone in the car can edit the list. What is the alternative now? Well yesterday I was in a car and the driver had her phone set up with a bluetooth connection and I didn't. I couldn't add my phone without removing hers. I wanted to listen to a song with her. The solution? I had to text her a link and then the next time she wasn't driving she had to unlock her phone, click the link, and play the song. At that point the song still wasn't in her playlist so that required additional steps.

This kind of thing highlights what I hate about companies asking for feedback. Invariably an idea comes in and it is just so frustrating as a user that it doesn't happen that it detracts from the perceived value of the service, and it also seems more than a little adversarial.
