[Mobile][Playlists] Remove Apple Watch 50 Song Limit

I am so grateful that we finally can download Spotify playlists on the Apple Watch, but I was pretty disappointed to find out that there is a 50 song limit per playlist. I’m not sure if that is on purpose for formatting or storage concerns, but I would love to see that limit removed so that I can download full playlists to my Watch and listen to all my music without having to have my phone on me.

Updated on 2023-07-05

Hey folks,

Thanks for coming to the Spotify Idea Exchange and voting to make this happen.

We're happy to announce that now there’s a limit of 100 downloads per playlist. There's more info here.

Once again, thanks for helping us make Spotify better, by participating here on the Community.

This is RIDICULOUS. Seriously. 50 songs? This is not a MP3 player from 2010. Hurry the eff up, it's not that complicated.

I am considering moving to Apple Music because of the limit...

at least give us the ability to select 50....

REMOVE_50_SONG_LIMIT

This 50 song limit seems like an arbitrary limit imposed by the developer(s) in order to make the horrendous rollout last year not fail completely. I put the "s" in parentheses because I find it hard to believe that Spotify has more than a single junior developer in a dingy basement with intermittent internet access working on the entire Apple Watch Spotify app. I can imagine if they immediately allowed full playlists of >100 songs to download to watches, they probably would've never been able to make it work in the first place. But now that the app is somewhat stable and the feature is partially implemented, the junior developer gave up trying to make improvements because they reached the limit of their technical expertise.

The scenario of what I imagine is going on at Spotify may sound kinda extreme or even mean spirited, but what else am I supposed to think when Spotify gives no updates of when this seemingly arbitrary limitation will be lifted or even a proper reason for why the limit exists? If there was a legitimate reason like Apple itself imposing a cap of downloaded playlist size (which clearly is not the case since, as someone pointed out somewhere in this long thread, the Deezer app exists and doesn't have this limitation), I'd be less upset and would just quietly drop Spotify without making a post. But it seems like the communications team is simply as inept as the developer(s). They just say "Note: There’s a download limit of 50 tracks per playlist." No reason, no explanation, nothing. One of the most pathetic things I have ever seen from a multi billion dollar company. Hire any college intern and they'll do a better job over the course of a single summer.

I never really had any gripe with Spotify until I wanted to use it on my Apple Watch. However, the experience has been so pathetic that I'm going to start a free trial of Apple Music. If the trial runs out and the downloaded playlist limit is still 50 songs, then I'm just going to make the full switch and actively dissuade friends from using Spotify if they plan to use it on their watch. I'm not holding my breath for any improvements and completely expect to be renewing Apple Music in a month.

This is my first and only post on this Spotify forum. I never post anything anywhere, but I have been so incredibly disappointed that I wanted to make it clear to any Spotify employees (especially the developer(s)) who might stumble upon this post that their sluggishness and ability to do literally anything positive is honestly astounding. I am genuinely surprised and amazed at how horrible this Apple Watch app is. I have absolutely nothing good to say. The mere thought that having more than 50 songs in a downloaded playlist in 2021, now 2022, is an new idea or improvement that needs to be explicitly stated and then voted on and then finally maybe communicated to the developer(s) is silly. This entire thread should not have ever existed in the first place. Asking for something like voice activated downloading of music and transfer of playlists is something that belongs here, not a plea to stop artificially keeping the downloaded playlist size limit unbearably small.

Again, the purpose of this post is not to plead with the developer(s) to make improvements or for the forum moderators to raise more internal internal tickets, because after over a year, that is clearly not effective in any capacity whatsoever. The forum moderators can make all the claims they want that this point has been communicated to the developer(s), but the inaction makes me think they are just Damage Control Specialists and say whatever they need to in a feeble attempt to prevent more people from switching to another platform. Their previous responses over the course of more than one year and subsequent inaction and silence on any sort of status makes this the only possible rational conclusion. I only want to make sure someone at Spotify reads this and realizes that everyone thinks their implementation of offline music on their Apple Watch app sucks.

I'm in your camp and have done my own grousing about it in this forum. I
was also so outraged about this I started up an Apple Music trial and
intended to switch over. When I learned that I couldn't stream Apple Music
to my Sonos speakers through the Apple Music app without using Airplay, I
gave up on Apple Music. So, for me it was an ecosystem incompatibility.

It is unconscionable that so many people have complained about this limit
with absolutely no explanation or appeasement from Spotify.

I've abided by the limitations and separated my large playlists into
50-song playlists and downloaded each of them to my watch. It certainly
isn't a space issue - I've downloaded 40 50-song playlists to my watch.

Hey Spotify feel free to use this code snippet for free

let songLimit = 1000

Seriously though this feels so stupid I have a 32gb watch  and the Spotify app is clearly downloading the songs in low quality mode anyway so I should be able to fit thousands of songs on it.

Definitely unacceptable. There is no reason for a limit. Moreover, it is impossible to download liked songs. Seriously?

I am going to switch to Apple Music because of this, really. I really have no choice tbh. Apple Music gives me more song options, plus I can put it in my iPod too. Sorry Spotify, never wanted to switch but yes.

Ok so I can download multiple playlists on to my Apple Watch (subject to its capacity) but each playlist is capped at 50 songs - why? Doesn’t seem to make much sense to me!

I’ve currently got four playlists on my apple watch equaling 200 songs but I would much rather have just the one playlist on my apple watch with 200 songs or better still no cap on songs at all would be even nicer.

Please remove this limitation for the benefit of your loyal users, thanks.

Over a year and still waiting for the crazy 50 song limit to be fixed.
