[Music] Tag Music

It'd be awesome to be able to add my own tags to all of my songs in playlists, so I can easily and specifically sort my songs how I like.

Should be a pretty simple tool to implement.

Thanks

It would really improve the user experience and playlist creation if it were possible to add personal labels or categories to songs and have automatic playlists that are created from song data.

For example, a song would be added to an automatic playlist if it was liked, was released in the 1990s, and had a personal label of a"Rock".

Seria muito bom se existissem tags para as músicas no spotify. Tenho uma lista extensa de musicas curtidas, e as vezes gostaria de poder selecionar algumas por gênero, sem ter o trabalho de criar playlists paralelas.

In my Liked Songs playlist, it would be great if Spotify displayed the genre or vibe of the song that’s currently playing.

Spotify already knows this information (since it uses it for the genre and mood filters at the top of Liked Songs), but it’s not visible to listeners. Having a small label under the title or even just highlighting the filter at the top that the song would fit into, would make it easy to stay in the same vibe, discover new songs that match the mood, and better understand what kind of music you’re drawn to.

Unlike “Song Radio,” this feature would stay within your Liked Songs, letting you explore your own library by mood or genre instead of pulling in unrelated tracks.

This feature could help users:

  • Instantly see what genre or mood their current song fits into

  • Follow that vibe through their Liked Songs

  • Build playlists that flow naturally by energy or feel

  • Learn more about their listening patterns

Sometimes I just want to keep the same energy going — this feature would make that effortless.

Good idea!

I would like to request a feature that allows users to add custom tags to individual songs and filter playlists based on those tags.

Feature Overview
・Users can assign any tag to a song (e.g., artist name, mood, genre, theme, or any custom label).
 Example:
 ・“Emotion” — MAN WITH A MISSION → tag: MWAM
 ・“Shoujo S” — SCANDAL → tag: SCANDAL
・Playlists would show a list of all tags used within that playlist.
・Selecting one or more tags would filter the playlist to show only songs that match the chosen tags.

Why This Would Be Useful
・Helps users organize and navigate large playlists more easily.
・Allows grouping songs by artist, mood, theme, or any personal system.
・Improves the listening experience by enabling filtered shuffle based on tags.
・More flexible than folders or playlists, since a song can have multiple tags.

Example Use Case
・I have a large “Rock” playlist with many different artists.
・By tagging songs with labels like “MWAM”, “SCANDAL”, “J-Rock”, or “High-Energy,” I could quickly filter the playlist to show only MWAM songs or only high-energy tracks depending on my mood.

Conclusion
Custom tags and tag-based filtering would give users much more control over organizing and enjoying their music.

Adding genre tags to singles, albums, and EPs (exactly as Apple Music has) would allow listeners to get a quick glimpse of what kind of music that they are about to get into. For example, with Honey Water by Girlfriend, listeners on Apple Music know exactly what kind of content they're about to get into before even listening to the music.

I've wanted custom tags in Spotify for years. No idea why no one has done it. So I did it myself.

Tag and rate your tracks directly within Spotify, and build smart playlists based on these tags.

This has been one year in the making - lots of love, late nights, and ~100k lines of code went into this.

Summary

Playlists are currently the main tool for music organization on Spotify, but they are inherently limited: they are one-dimensional, static containers, while music listening is often contextual, emotional, and multi-dimensional.

I propose introducing optional, user-defined tags for songs, allowing listeners to categorize tracks with multiple labels (e.g. genre, mood, context, origin) and generate dynamic listening sessions by combining tags. This system would coexist with playlists, not replace them, and would benefit both power users and Spotify’s recommendation systems.

Problem

Playlists work well for linear collections, but they struggle with:

  • Multi-category songs (one song often belongs to several moods, genres, or contexts)

  • High friction when organizing music (adding the same song to many playlists)

  • Poor scalability as music libraries grow

  • Rigid listening experiences that don’t adapt well to moment-to-moment intent

For example, a song might be:

  • Rock

  • Sad

  • American

  • Late-night

Today, representing this requires multiple playlists, duplication, or compromise.

Proposed Solution: User-Defined Tags

Introduce an optional tagging system where:

  • Each song can have zero, one, or multiple tags

  • Tags are user-defined (free text or assisted suggestions)

  • Tags are private by default

  • Playlists remain fully supported and unchanged

Example tags for a song:

  • rock

  • sad

  • american

  • night

  • introspective

Modular Listening Sessions

Instead of selecting a single playlist, users could create dynamic mixes by selecting tags.

Examples:

  • Songs tagged: rock + sad

  • Songs tagged: chill + night (excluding live)

  • Songs tagged: electronic + workout

These sessions are:

  • Generated on the fly

  • Always up to date

  • Reusable and editable

  • Not limited to a fixed song list

This enables a more flexible and expressive way of listening that matches how people actually think about music.

User Experience Considerations

To avoid increasing complexity for casual users:

  • Tagging is optional

  • Tags can be AI-suggested (users confirm or edit)

  • Advanced filtering lives behind progressive disclosure

  • Casual users can continue using playlists exactly as they do today

This makes the feature powerful for those who want it, without impacting others.

Benefits for Users

  • More precise and personal music organization

  • Reduced friction compared to maintaining many playlists

  • Better discovery within one’s own library

  • Listening sessions that adapt to mood, time, or context

Benefits for Spotify

From a data and product perspective, this feature enables:

  • Rich, user-generated semantic labels

  • Better understanding of how users personally categorize music

  • Improved recommendation quality and explainability

  • Discovery of emerging micro-genres and contextual clusters

  • Stronger engagement from power users and music enthusiasts

This data complements existing audio analysis and implicit signals with explicit human intent.

Technical Feasibility

From a technical standpoint, this approach is feasible:

  • Tags are lightweight metadata

  • Many-to-many relationships are standard at scale

  • Query-based session generation is efficient

  • Recommendation systems already consume similar feature vectors

The primary challenges are UX design and adoption, not infrastructure or cost.

Why This Matters

Music is multi-dimensional, but current organization tools are not.
User-defined tagging introduces a flexible layer between raw tracks and playlists, allowing Spotify to support deeper personalization while preserving simplicity.

This feature does not replace playlists — it augments them.

Closing

This proposal aims to empower users who want deeper control over their music experience, while also creating long-term value for Spotify through richer personalization data. Even a limited or experimental rollout could provide meaningful insights and engagement.

Thank you for considering this idea.
