[Podcasts] Split out podcasts into separate app

There have been many posts about improving the UI for podcasts within the Spotify app. But the more reasonable architectural decision seems to be to use a separate app for podcasts / audiobooks. Trying to cram too much into the spotify music app is confusing; it bloats the experience and distracts the user.

As an episodic medium with repeat consumption and curation, podcasts are just very different than traditional music. In particular, once I've decided to listen to a podcast, the likelihood of me wanting to listen to music is extremely low - podcast-specific search, prioritization and discovery is much worse when mixed up with musical content.

Why not just split it out into two tabs? The home screen on desktop is just becoming unbearable with 'clutter'. A simple toggle switch towards the header would really help to group stuff better.

We don't even need a sperate app, just let us filter them out!

I get that you've invested big in them and you need to pay Joe Rogan somehow but surely a way to filter them out for those of us who don't want them would lead to happier customers without having any effect on people who actually want them.

Are you worried that "Don't care about podcast" people are a larger segment than you want to admit ?

I no longer listen to any podcasts. The few I did went Spotify Only and to be honest I'd rather do without them then encourage your app to shove any more of them down my throat.

Listening Spotify support,

I will capitalized it for Spotify Support. Maybe they understand in this way this english better. Because we all feel Spotify support is apparently half-blind and deaf. So opening with 'listening Spotify support' maybe not really having an effect, but OK.

DO NOT WANT PODCASTS AND AUDIOBOOKS IN THE SAME APP
GO BACK TO A MUSIC ONLY APP FOR MUSIC LOVERS

btw: OK to have of course a podcast and audiobook app. Because you have those lovers too 🙂
btw2: Music lovers also appreciate a higher and clearer sound quality... but that is another deaf man's ear topic.

As a customer of roughly a decade, and a year after the Joe Rogan controversy, I am considering returning to Spotify for the better platform. However, I still don't agree with Spotify using what I would pay to fund exclusivity rights for podcasters.

Can we just get premium music without podcasts? And a separate plan for podcasts?

  • Apple does it better.
  • Dedicated apps for Apple Music and Apple Podcasts.
  • Music and Podcasts are very different thing.

Can I just pay for a premium subscription that excludes access to podcasts?

I am a considering returning to Spotify after the Joe Rogan controversy. But I see that Spotify has chosen to keep that podcaster for whom Spotify has chosen to pay for exclusivity rights. I don't like that subscription money is paying for that. It would be different if it was simple remuneration.

To avoid this whole fiasco, can I just subscribe to music only?

Important: My last idea was removed by the moderation team without my acknowledgement. Idea exchange guidelines talk about "No pricing, subscription or content related requests... Changes to pricing, subscriptions or the content available are specific to each market around the world". Please remember Spotify *added* Podcasts, a new line of business, to a service that historically only had music. A new subscription tier could certainly be added. I am not asking for individual content to be removed, I am asking about *categorical* content.

My biggest issue is that the podcast do not show the ones I listen to I tend to listen to the same podcasts. But when I go to the podcast there are a ton of not relevant podcasts recommended. But podcasts I listen to often are difficult to find to the point that I have to use the search tool. I'm considering switching to a different app because it's a pain to navigate the podcast page in Spotify.

Separate apps, separate tabs, somehow separate these two very different listening experiences.

I have been loving Spotify for many years, but have recently swapped to Apple Podcasts for my podcast needs.

Tired of losing my place or episode just to listen to music, avoiding music just to not have to go and find the same episode and keep listening from the same spot!

With two apps, I listen to both music and podcasts more often.

Two spaces for two different activities makes much more sense, and would really be appreciated.

Yes. We need more division between the two. I just use and interact with podcasts and music very differently and having them all mashed together makes the experience of each worse.

I realize Spotify probably strongly does not want to have them in separate apps, but maybe there is another way to add more division between the two. It's really messy right now and the UX is poor.

It is truly disappointing that this obvious UX disaster has not been addressed yet by Spotify. Music and Podcasts are separate phenomena, for separate occasions. I am sure most people know, before opening the app, whether they want to listen to music or to a podcast. Therefore, it is nothing but an annoyance that users have to deal with a cluttered UI that mixes music and podcasts.
