SPOTIFY MIXING HARDWARE

Status: Live Idea

I’d like to propose that Spotify develops its own hardware device —such as a USB audio interface, a MIDI controller, or a compact DJ-style mixer— designed to let users mix songs live directly from Spotify’s catalog.

The key idea is simple:

being able to load two or more tracks that are already on Spotify and mix them in real time, using crossfaders, EQ, filters, and tempo sync—similar to what DJ software like Traktor offers, but fully integrated into Spotify.

This wouldn’t replace professional DJ setups, but would open a new creative use of Spotify for:

  • DJs and music enthusiasts
  • Creators and streamers
  • Users who want to explore and connect music by mixing it, not just listening

An official Spotify mixing device could turn the platform into not only a place to discover music, but also a place to perform, experiment, and create with the music already available on Spotify.

Additional thought:

If developing official hardware isn’t feasible, another great option could be for Spotify to collaborate with an existing hardware manufacturer to create a Spotify-compatible (or Spotify-exclusive) DJ controller.

This device could allow temporary offline downloads of tracks directly onto the hardware, tied to a Spotify Premium account, using time-limited performance licenses for each song.

That way, users could mix tracks reliably in live situations while fully respecting artists’ rights and Spotify’s licensing model.

This kind of partnership could open the door to live mixing and performance without Spotify having to build the hardware ecosystem alone.
