[Social] CURIOUS TO HEAR WHAT PERSON NEXT TO YOU LISTENING TO? Music Sharing

Hello,

Just imagine a situation:

You are sitting in the bus. And listening to your favourite music on headphones. When you notice a cute person who is sitting in the bus too, and really enjoying the music, while shaking head with the beat. So curious.. WHAT SHE/HE IS LISTENING TO?!
How to know that? You take your phone from your pocket and open spotify app. There you see everyperson in 50m radius who is using Spotify and shares their music. And you see that she is listening for A-HA - TAKE ON MEE!. You connect to her music and listen to this song also. And when the bus stops, you leave it and say to her/him: ARE YOU PLANNING TO GO TO A-HA CONCERT THIS SUMMER? I LOVE THIS SONG TOO.
And you live happily ever after ❤️
THE END (Or maybe just a beginning 🙂
___

So, the thing is : a possibility to look for surrounding spotify users and see what they are listening. A possibility to connect to their song. A possibility to turn ON or turn OFF music sharing (maybe you would like a private moment, and dont want to see everyone listening for your "shame songs" haha!

I personally really really often pass a person with headphones and am very very curious, what they are listening to that moment.

Hey everyone,

It seems that this idea ended up in the wrong board accidentally, so we're bringing it back.

We're keeping the previous Not Right Now status, as we don't have any immediate plans to implement this. As soon as we have any new information to share, rest assured we'll check back in here.

Take care.

wanted to share an idea with you—something similar to Snapchat’s map feature. Imagine a map where you could see public profiles of other users and what they’re currently listening to. You could even add filters to show the top songs within a certain radius, like 5, 10, or 15 km. I think this would be a really fun and engaging feature!

I dont know how spotify community works, is this an ideia a employee at spotify had or just a community post?

If so the last update was in 2023 so is there really hope of this happening?

I don't need people judging me on my music tastes while I'm just trying to get home from work

"Sneak"—a feature that allows users to see what songs people nearby are listening to in real time, only if they opt-in and grant permission.

How It Works:
1. Opt-In Privacy: Users activate "Sneak" in settings, choosing whether to share their listening activity with nearby Spotify users.
2. Nearby Discovery: When enabled, users can see a live feed of songs playing around them (e.g., in a café, gym, or public transport) from other "Sneak" participants.
3. **Interactive Elements:**
- "Wave" Reaction:  Send a virtual "wave" to someone listening to the same song or a track you love.
- Playlist Add: Instantly save nearby songs to your library.
- Temporary Visibility: Listening activity is only visible while the app is open and the user is nearby.

Why Users Will Love It:
- **Social Connection:** Sparks conversations and shared moments over music.
- **Music Discovery:** Expands taste by revealing real-time trends in your vicinity.
- **Privacy-Centric:** Fully optional, with clear controls to toggle visibility on/off.

When I'm at public places I always wonder what pleople around me are listening so I've been thinking about an idea of making a social feature in Spotify. We should be able to see what nearby people in a determinated area (10 - 50 meters) are listening to, visit their profile, check their most listened musics and bands, their playlists and even add to a friend list or group (to share and mix playlists). Of course, it all should be authorized by the user, like a public profile. Could be a great oportunity to interect with other, making some friends and even find a company to festivals and music shows.

I’d like a way for spotify inbars to be able to create custom playlists based on who is in the bar automatically. Walk into a bar…playlist is lame…call a group of friends to come join you, the algorithm morphs to the majority artists of people in the space. I think it’d be fun 🙂

Idea:

Imagine being on a train, in a café, or at a festival — and discovering that someone nearby is listening to the same song you love.

With a feature called Nearby Jam, Spotify could let people around you (within Bluetooth or Wi-Fi range) join a shared listening session anonymously.

How it could work:

  • Spotify detects other users nearby who have “Nearby Jam” enabled.
  • You can join their session or invite them to join yours with a single tap.
  • Everyone hears the same music in real time.
  • No need to add contacts or share personal info — it’s all anonymous.

Why it matters:

Music has always been a way to connect people, even strangers.

This feature could make Spotify not just a streaming app, but a social experience — helping people discover new music, make connections, and share moments through sound.

Let’s make music something that brings people together — even if they’ve never met before. 🎧
