[Your Music] Creating "Collections" of Albums

I have an idea that could make using Spotify better for people who put a lot of effort into managing their music libraries (and for everyone else as well).

Collections menu in Your LibraryCollections menu in Your Library

The idea is simple: Being able to create collections or lists of whole albums. Of course you could just add albums to regular playlists but then it just adds the songs separately, which is messy, so you can't easily see which or how many albums are there in the list or checking if there are missing songs.

You can add and remove whole albums to collections, much like songs to playlistsYou can add and remove whole albums to collections, much like songs to playlists

By having album collections we could easily see which albums are added to them and it would make it quicker to select certain albums for downloading by toggling the download button of a collection containing them. We could also re-order the list of albums quicker than re-ordering a simple playlist of consecutive albums broken down to songs.

This would also make it possible to listen to certain albums in a specific or even random order without having to add every album to the queue one by one.

You can download/un-download every album in the collection with one tap, you can also either play the albums in order or shuffle them, or even shuffle all songs within the albumsYou can download/un-download every album in the collection with one tap, you can also either play the albums in order or shuffle them, or even shuffle all songs within the albumsAdding or removing albums from collectionsAdding or removing albums from collections

Hey folks,

Thanks for coming to the Community, and adding your vote to this idea!

We're marking this idea as 'Not Right Now' for the time being, as this isn't something we have any immediate plans to implement. We appreciate you sharing your thoughts, and we'll continue to pass these along to the right teams.

If we do have any new info to share, rest assured we'll check back in here with a new status.

Thanks.

Thanks for the rapid response. I've tried to fix that without success.

To start with, the playlist already included all of the tracks on each
album.

However, I hadn't ticked the “add missing tracks” option when creating the
collection because I reckoned that at some point there was sure to be a
re-release with bonus tracks I might not want to include. I wondered if
that had been the issue.

So I deleted the collection using your minus button (this took multiple
attempts, and only worked after I had changed the name of the relevant
playlist in Spotify).

Then I made a new collection from the renamed playlist, and this time I did
tick the “add missing tracks” option.

I opened the collection, clicked the re-order icon: no change from before.
Same albums have no icon.

I'm out of ideas now...

  • Hmm ok you're going through all the right steps then....if you send me a link to the playlist I can see what happens when I try to make a collection from it...

Thanks for the further assistance, but it’s fixed now.

I suddenly remembered that I'd started off creating the playlist by
dragging all of each album’s tracks to it. Then I remembered there was a
three dots option to add an album to a playlist and switched to that.

It's those early ones that were missing the icon, so I deleted and re-added
them.

Interesting that enabling “add missing tracks” feature didn't help along
the way.

Thanks again. I appreciate it.

Glad you were able to get it working!

I think I know why the "add missing tracks" feature wasn't helping you - I think the albums probably did eventually update to be movable, but you would've needed to refresh the collection after a couple mins of adding the collection to see it working. I've discovered there's a delay upwards of a couple mins for the collection  to reflect changes made to the playlist....I'm going to log a bug for this, but in the meantime, just know some changes could take a couple mins to take effect...

Sorry, spoke too soon. The missing move icon problem keeps coming back. If
you want to continue the dialogue in detail maybe this public thread is not
the best place. Let me know – your direct messages are not open.

Good idea...I sent you a message

Completely agree that this is what spotify is missing. I listen to full albums and don't use the playlist feature at all. It would be amazing to able to create collections of albums, for example based on a band, or a genre, or a vibe. Please do this spotify!
