[Your Music] Creating "Collections" of Albums

I have an idea that could make using Spotify better for people who put a lot of effort into managing their music libraries (and for everyone else as well).

Collections menu in Your LibraryCollections menu in Your Library

The idea is simple: Being able to create collections or lists of whole albums. Of course you could just add albums to regular playlists but then it just adds the songs separately, which is messy, so you can't easily see which or how many albums are there in the list or checking if there are missing songs.

You can add and remove whole albums to collections, much like songs to playlistsYou can add and remove whole albums to collections, much like songs to playlists

By having album collections we could easily see which albums are added to them and it would make it quicker to select certain albums for downloading by toggling the download button of a collection containing them. We could also re-order the list of albums quicker than re-ordering a simple playlist of consecutive albums broken down to songs.

This would also make it possible to listen to certain albums in a specific or even random order without having to add every album to the queue one by one.

You can download/un-download every album in the collection with one tap, you can also either play the albums in order or shuffle them, or even shuffle all songs within the albumsYou can download/un-download every album in the collection with one tap, you can also either play the albums in order or shuffle them, or even shuffle all songs within the albumsAdding or removing albums from collectionsAdding or removing albums from collections

Hey folks,

Thanks for coming to the Community, and adding your vote to this idea!

We're marking this idea as 'Not Right Now' for the time being, as this isn't something we have any immediate plans to implement. We appreciate you sharing your thoughts, and we'll continue to pass these along to the right teams.

If we do have any new info to share, rest assured we'll check back in here with a new status.

Thanks.

We need this for Artists and Albums so hard.

It will be really useful to create collections like Hiphop, Metal, Lofi, Favorite Hiphop Albums, Favorite J. Cole Albums, Favorite Hiphop Artitsts etc. And damn even playlists. Perhaps just allow us to add Artists and Albums to Folders?

carlosgoyeneche

Exactly! Even that folders idea could work very well

Following 7 years of 'not right now' how do we go about getting this implemented or raised again?

I feel this is essential and would be a relatively simple feature to create..

I think Spotify stopped innovating and listening to its customers, users. After all these years, there is not a sensible reply to this post. I also don’t see innovative new developments much. What have they been made significant in recent years? Where is high resulution audio? For several years they are promising it and not delivering consistently. I am now mostly using Apple Music for several reasons. Better sound quality,  better suggestion algorithm and better new features everyday. For classical and jazz Apple is no brainer, for pop and younger generarions maybe still Spotify appealing.

This feature already exists to some degree in the desktop app.

Top left corner of your screen to the three dots > file > new playlist folder (ctrl/cmd + shift + n.

From there you can move/drag + drop playlists + albums to the desired folder.

you do however have to still download each item individually rather than choosing to download an entire folder in one go.

Its not perfect, but it's better than nothing. I would love if you were able to move items to/from or create a folder on mobile, but alas.

@rudething you can create folders for playlists, but you cannot drag saved albums into the folders, if you do, it just creates a playlist of the album, as well, you select play on an entire folder from the desktop version, you can only play the individual playlists inside the folder on mobile

rudething

@spencer9248 I know the feature has its limitations, hence my inclusion of the alternative existing only "to some degree." However, I could indeed have been less assertive when I said the feature already existed. I merely mentioned the function as anyone who has only used the mobile client wouldn't be aware of even folders existing. Like I said before, it's not perfect, but better than nothing.

Sure @rudething, there is a very basic implementation. To me that makes it even less understandable why Spotify didn't go all the way and just implemented it properly, but left it in its half-baked, kind of useless state instead. The existence if folders is living proof that there is no conceptual problem with implementing collections. So it's not a technical hurdle but rather a lack of willingness to give us fully functioning collections.
