automatically switch to mono audio when listening on single earbud

I sometimes listen to music on a single ear with bluetooth headphones. I have to switch to mono audio every time I want to do this, otherwise is lose out on a lot of stuff in the song. There are even some songs where the whole intro part is only on one side. It'd be pretty nice if Spotify was able to recognize that the output device is only a single earbud and switch to mono audio automatically.

I don't know if Android/iOS provides a framework for this or if its even possible (with wired earbuds surely not) but just wanted to get the idea out there.

Since most Bluetooth headphones have their own app which knows which earbud you're using I guess there must be some way to do it.
