Personally, I just listen to whatever music fits my tastes. There's deifnitely something to be said for music that becomes so mainstream that you're constantly hearing it and you start to enjoy it less, but generally speaking, I just listen to whatever I enjoy, regardless of how popular it is.
For example, while she isn't an artist I listen to a ton, I enjoy Luna Shadows, who has just under 100K monthly listeners. Here's one of her songs I like:
I'm very much into undergroung scenes. Some artists I listen to are downright obscure.
But I also listen to artists a lot of people know about, like the Rolling Stones and others. Just basic musical education for myself.
I used to listen to the radio a lot many years ago. Mainstream music channels, EDM and pop hits and I was quite aware of songs like 'Pjanoo' (Eric Prydz) and 'Womanizer' (Britney Spears I guess). They were chart-topping.
But now I have access to Spotify and internet with no data limit, I can now listen to everything I like and dig as deep as I want to. On-demand listening, man! :)
Why not both? I don’t understand why people don’t like something just because its popular. Thats wack to me, all that should matter is that the track evoked emotion into you, or some type of feeling imo
