Just something to add. If you want something a little more real time, you might consider creating an last.fm account works with desktop apps and also mobile apps too, and the last.fm account can be linked to Spotify user accounts through the app settings: http://www.last.fm/

I use this as facebook kind of got messy doing Spotify realtime play history updates through activity on facebook pages. The only draw back offline playback does not seem to work, there is no scrobbel history saved during offline use of the Spotify app.
