Songs about long distance relationships

I feel like it's really difficult to find songs about specific topics like this. Especially ones that aren't mainstream. I'm looking for high quality songs about ldr couples that aren't cliche. I already have a decent collection of alternative songs about this but I still feel like there's probably a lot more stuff I haven't heard. Any suggestions? I'm open to anything except country (sorry).

Ooh, I like this topic! Looking forward to seeing what other people post.

For me, the musical world of long-distance relationships starts with Marvin Gaye's "Distant Lover." It's sort of mainstream, in that it was a hit when it was new, but you may not know it if you're not of a certain age.

I guess you don't get more mainstream than Vanessa Carlton's "A Thousand Miles" (there's a reason, after all, she refers to this song as "ATM").

Here's another oldie but goodie:

It's about a couple who live in different time zone...

Hi!

I love your topic and would like to tell you a story.

My husband and I met on last.fm because we listened to the same song at the same time and became friends. We had no intention of dating, because I was in central Canada and he was in California. Our initial conversations were only about music, but then talking became texting, and texting became phone calls, and phone calls became video chats. After a few months, he came to see me, and for over two years after that, we carried out a long distance relationship. Eventually, I got clearance to immigrate to the U.S, but let me tell you it was a long battle. There were a lot of heartfelt conversations and tearful airport "see you soon's." As time went on, we got more accustomed to it, but I can't think of too many scenarios that will lead you into such soaring highs and excruciating lows.

We flew back and forth, a distance of 1,857 miles, and sometimes months would elapse before we could see eachother again. Once the paperwork was started, only he could visit me. It was so exciting to see each other, but as the days began to wind down like sand through an hourglass, we would get this horrible sinking feeling, knowing our time together would come to a close. It made it hard for the last few days to remain in the moment and enjoy the rest of the time we had left.

On one such night we were on the highway, driving through the dark, lost in our own thoughts and this song came on. You'll need to get out the tissues, because it's an intense one. (The whole album is incredible... give it a listen sometime! 🙂 )

Let's just say we only made it halfway through the song before changing it to something happier... it was a little too real.

We triumphed despite all this, so I disagree with anyone who says long distance relationships don't work. They can and they do, and there is nothing that will make your love stronger or more certain; nothing that will make it more appreciated or frightfully alive.

Here is a more hopeful addition to the list:

I will think about it and see if I can remember other songs to add.

Don't know about cliche, I think every LDR tells a different story 🙂  but I love this one:

I think this one is kinda telling you about LDR

A very heartfelt topic to be sure!

My contribution is more on the gloomy side, though, and should not be seen in a prophetic light. I guess any relationship becomes long distance after death...

Have a pleasant evening..! 🙂

Just wanted to share my single "Paper Wings" & "Waiting"

Both of these singles are about long distance relationships and heartache.

"Paper Wings" will be featured in the new Bravo TV series this July called "A Night With My Ex"

Great topic! I have the perfect high quality (and lowkey) song about a long distance relationship. It's called Portland, Maine and it's by Donovan Woods

Songwriter Donovan Woods originally wrote this for Tim McGraw's Sundown Heaven Town album.

spotify:track:5IAGCzTdtzjtCi8US45Uay <<< Country song alert

2 years later released his own version as a single, which you'll be glad to hear isn't Country. It's still all about the acoustic guitar, but I'd label the genre as Singer/Songwriter.

The Donovan Wood's version is amazing. His delivery is very emotive. Hope you enjoy!

How about the Proclaimers - 500 miles?

One Way Ticket by ONE OK ROCK is a good one. Really captures the emotion, tying it up in a familiar pop punk bow.

Maybe you will like this one 😄

"Hey there, Delilah
Don't you worry about the distance
I'm right there if you get lonely
Give this song another listen
Close your eyes
Listen to my voice, it's my disguise
I'm by your side"

That's an LDR as far as I know

This one is about the harshness of letting go... with and upbeat feel good vibe! Hope you enjoy
