2018 My Year In Music

With 20,650 scrobbles (176,597 total) and 4,672 different artists listened (31,879 total), 2018 was the year of Drake. Even though my first scrobble from him was way back in 2009, this year I had three of his songs in my top played songs of the year. Yikes.

Just like in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 here’s a review of the music I listened to through 2018.

  • Here are my must "loved" tracks of the year in chronological order:

If I had to choose, I'd make "Alone in a Room" my song of the year. Dark topic, great hook, awesome song.

"All I needed was the last thing I wanted
To sit alone in a room and say it all out loud"

  • Here are some highlights from my Top 53 played songs according to last.fm:

Influencer, YouTuber, Instagramer... Words that define the late '10s. My most played track of the year gets the sentiment across.

"I think it could be me
The world's too small for me
My face up in your face
My face on every screen"

With more than 82 million streams in its first week, it's no surprise "God's Plan" made it to the list. Drake was everywhere in 2018.

"She said, "Do you love me?" I tell her, "Only partly"
I only love my bed and my momma, I'm sorry"

Country's crossover hit was the song that wouldn't go away in 2018. It was really hard not to get hooked to the chorus.

"If it's meant to be, it'll be, it'll be
Baby, just let it be
So won't you ride with me, ride with me
See where this thing goes"

Jack White gets my award for most annoying song of the year.

"The rock 'n' roller, the young and older
Rolling back to the stroller
(Over and over)"

Pale Waves, the indie pop act from Manchester, UK, was so good, they had two #MusicMonday recommendations from me. Definitively, my discovery of the year.

"This night is electric
And I won't forget it
You're so heavenly
You're so heavenly
But don't you know it, don't you know it, baby?"

  • My Top 5 most listened albums of the year:

2018 marked the 30th anniversary from two monster Rock albums, and their re-releases didn't disappoint. (Technically, GnR's album was from 1987, but it took a year to really take off).

  • Finally, as mentioned before, #MusicMonday is where I gather my music recommendations from up and coming artists throughout the year. For the first time, the year compilation is available as a standalone playlist.
