You wouldn’t believe it but one of the things I miss most about the city is the subway. As it pulls into the station with a hot gust of air, everyone piles around the doors hoping to stuff themselves in. After a few people exit the car, the crowd moves simultaneously around you forcing you to pack yourself as tightly as you can into the people already on the train. We’re all going the same place. You look to the person you’re inappropriately pushing up against and mouth the words sorry, they nod their head in acceptance of your apology and you both vow not to look each other in the eyes the rest of the way. So you basically rest your chin on their shoulder and as the train starts to pull forward everyone in the car sways. You know you won’t fall because the crowd around you is too tight. You reach for the overhead bar, knowing it will be hot and probably sticky and as you’re doing so you grasp hands with another intern sweating his way to work. You blush and quickly pull your hand away. This is the most action you’ve had all month. You forget that you have your AirPods in, so you weasel your phone out of your back pocket. The screen is wet from your swass. Hoping no one else saw, you wipe it off and navigate your way to Spotify where you decide on a playlist. You close your eyes as the mumbles and sniffs that surround you drown in the easy beat streaming through your airpods. Today is gonna be a good day. It doesn’t matter that your make up is sweating off your face, everyone looks like that. The coffee on the persons breath to your right is strong but sweet and goes nicely with the weed and wet rag smell of the train. You realize you’re living your best years in the heart of New York City. As crappy and exhausting as it is sometimes, you wouldn’t change it for the world. Especially this part. This commute is one of the most intimate parts of the city. One that no tourist will ever be able to take home as a souvenir, but will be so vivid in your memory forever.
