👧 Only Child - Sasha Sloan

👦 Son of an Only Child - Tom Odell

Yes, the titles of these two songs are reminiscent of each other - that's how, while listening through to Sasha Sloan's new album, titled 'Only Child', I thought of its possible sibling, Tom Odell's 'Son of an Only Child'.

I love how two songs which apparently broach the same subject (being an only child) can do so in such contrasting ways, both sonically and lyrically. Have a listen for yourselves 🙂

After reading this, I realised that from my most recent songs, these two TikTok -inspired tracks have a garden-y vibe connecting them.

Let me throw another couple into the mix:

A lot of songs which I love have a single version and a subsequent version with a featured artist. A few that come to mind are 'Us' - James Bay ft. Alicia Keys; 'Shape of You' - Ed Sheeran ft. Stormzy; 'Dark Days' - Local Natives ft. Sylvan Esso.

The version of 'Seventeen' featuring Norah Jones is not just Norah adding her vocals to the second verse. Norah's jazz influence, with the gently swinging drum rhythm replacing the punchy 4:4 rock one in the original, is all over the track. It's not so much a feature as it is a collaboration in the truest sense: two artists joining creative forces and (re)writing an entire song together.

Both tracks have “Helios” in their song titles; “Helios Hyperion” refers to the Sun god in ancient Greek mythology, while “Heliosphere” refers to the outer atmosphere of the Sun.

These songs are also similar in that they don’t have lyrics, and are representative of the psychedelic-, space-, and stoner rock genres of music.

The tracks are also connected by their relation to John Fahey. The first was released under the Takoma Records label, started by Fahey in the 1950s. The second is part of the American Primitive Guitar genre, which Fahey pioneered--Fahey's influence in the track is pretty recognizable.

Hey everyone, 

Not sure if I understood what @Peter means by sharing the sibling DNA, but I thought of two tracks that made me see them as siblings. The reason for this is that they actually have the same drum programming which can be easily heard. Considering they're both from the early 90s I guess this sample was popular among artists and that's why many used it.
