I can't answer why but pressing play and using shuffle works, so:
1. Tap a song in the playlist
2. Expand it up by clicking on it's title at the bottom of the screen
3. Press the shuffle icon (far left), if it goes green you can "skip" right
to the next song and it'll pick one at random
