Your favourite record label?

Hey : )

Do you have a favourite record label? If yes, feel free to talk about it here, and also share a release or two on why you love that label the most!

Have a lovely day

Great question, @Sebasty!

I’d say my favorite record label right now is Blues Funeral Recordings, an independent heavy/doom/stoner/psych label that was created by the founders of MeteorCity Records and the band Lowrider. I think this is pretty cool because Lowrider are one of my favorite bands, and also because MeteorCity released perhaps my favorite stoner rock record over a decade ago, Elder’s Dead Roots Stirring album (2011).

Another thing that I think is cool about Blues Funeral Recordings is their vinyl subscription series, called “PostWax.” PostWax Vol. 1 was comprised of 7 limited edition vinyl releases by bands such as Spotlights, Domkraft, and Big Scenic Nowhere—each with awesome album covers illustrated by visual artist Max Loeffler. And of these releases, I’d say my two favorites are Elder’s The Gold & Silver Sessions album (2019) and Lowrider’s Refractions album (2020):

  • I’ve mentioned Elder’s The Gold & Silver Sessions album here on the Community more than once already, but the hypnotic, krautrock-inspired instrumental jams “Illusory Motion” and “Weißensee” remain as two of my all-time favorite psychedelic rock songs; I especially like how the guitar melodies build epically towards these tracks' conclusions.

  • I only started listening to Lowrider last year, and their Refractions album has gradually become one of my favorite releases as well, with its heavily fuzzy/groovy desert rock sound. It seems that each time I listen to it, I enjoy it even more than the last time; and Refractions is also one of the few albums where I’ve saved all the songs to my Spotify library.

Blues Funeral Recordings are also planning to release music by some of my favorite bands like Acid King, Dozer, and Dopelord for their PostWax Vol. II series; and though I can't afford to pay for the vinyl subscription series at the moment, I'm looking forward to when these upcoming releases will be added to Spotify.

Cheers!

Thank you for the in-depth answer @AdamDamon : )

The vinyl subscription service sounds awesome too, and something one of my favourite labels does, although people can buy those same records from the label without being part of that tier.

I should introduce my favourites, and there are three - Renraku, Yuku and Nomark.

Renraku is a wonderful electronic music label releasing music best described as forward-pushing high-tech low frequencies. Some of my favourite artists on that label include Billain, Aleph, Bolten M, DFNKT, Casual Hex among many others. I can't really describe the label's collective sound more exactly, but you're definitely in for the ride anywhere you look - the floating disjointed atmospheres of Aethek (Prefecture is magic!) and Bolten M all the way to brain-shattering excitement Little Snake, Billain and many others offer.

Speaking of Billain, he has an LP coming very soon on the label, in April! And I'm eternally in love with this song of his:

Yuku is also an electronic music label with an incredible range of artists with even more jaw-dropping sound. Also really difficult to describe because this goes way beyond any genres. I could probably describe it as bass-driven electronica that shapeshifts a lot to fit any story.

There are some really intimate records (Yunis, that upcoming The Science EP) and there are warm nostalgic sounds with traces of hip hop (Sam A La Bamalot) and a lot of new era dancefloor rockers (Traka, Chrizpy Chriz, A.Fruit, ...) and intricate crafted worlds (Ténèbre, Subp Yao, Audeka and Chewlie), all of which are unlike anything else you've heard before.

Oh, and Current Value has released (and is releasing) insane stuff here. The LP with Amon sold out fast. : )

Think this Balatron album was their first release, and I love this song a lot:

Speaking of Amon Tobin, Nomark is his label, or more exactly, his vehicle for releasing music under his multiple aliases - Stone Giants, Two Fingers, Figueroa, Only Child Tyrant and even a bit of Cujo have all seen their debut on the label along with Amon's self-titled releases. Each alias runs an own distinct sound that is still unmistakably Amon, and I have found my home in his music.
The textures in this song give me life:

Nomark and Renraku have released physical albums with Bandcamp Vinyl Campaigns, a really cool service aiming to make things simple for the artist and the fan. Yuku has a record store in Prague where they sell their own releases and selections from other labels, and they have a subscription service for digital tier and vinyl tier.

Nomark has a subscription service too - support the artist and you'll get to have part of cool little things, including subscriber-exclusive music. Some of my biggest favourite songs have been dropped in here.  ❤️💕

I wall-of-texted a lot by accident so uhh... oops. 🙃

That is a great question. Personally, I like a few at the moment, but I'd probably pick Nuclear Blast Records right now. Really good metal label with a great number of great bands, including Rob Zombie, Die Apokalyptischen Reiter, and Lamb of God to name a few.

Interesting.. In the 60s/70s I would have told you Motown, Atlantic, Stax, and maybe Columbia. But, once music changed in the 80s, I don't think I had a favorite. There were good music that cam from all over.

I have no idea how to do that cool thing you did your post Meredith but I recommend "Vise Versa" they have one "album" called Like A Glove. 6 tracks and that is all you get but it has been a favourite CD of mine for a long time
