100-album limit in the Artist page

Hello.  I'm the person who complained about the 50-album cap for the web player over half-a-year ago.  Now it's happening again, and it's affected overall, regardless of login status.

Spotify updated the layout so you have to click "See Discography" on an artist to see their full album list.  Not as clean as as clicking an arrow key to show more, but whatever, all the albums can be shown in full view.  Or so I thought.  I looked up "Capcom Sound Team" and noticed the original Resident Evil 2 soundtrack is missing from its discography list.  I thought it was delisted, only to find out that the album's still searchable.

So I compared the album list on the Web Player to the album list on both the Desktop App and the Mobile App.  The Capcom Sound Team list stops at Dino Crisis Original Soundtrack from the Web Player, while it stops at Resident Evil 2 Original Soundtrack from the Apps.  In other words, if you're following artists that have over 100 albums and you're using the Web Player to listen, you're missing content.

Please remedy this if you can, Spotify.  You're so close to getting it right.

Hey folks,

Thank you for reporting this issue to us.

We just wanted to let you know that the right folks are looking into this.

We're not able to provide an exact timeline for a fix, but we'd recommend always keeping your Spotify app up to date to ensure you're on the latest version.

Thanks again!

The Spotify web player does not show all available albums for an artist when viewing an artist with a large number of albums.  Only the most recent 50 albums are shown after clicking Show More.  Examples of artists with this problem include Frank Zappa, Grateful Dead and Hot Tuna.  However, if you search for the name of a specific album, they can be found in the database.  Issue does not exist on the Android or desktop players, only in the crappy web app.  Try to find Joe's Garage by Frank Zappa as an example.

Help!  I need somebody!

Elena

Hey there @pounddog!

Thanks for getting in touch with us and sorry for the delay with our reply!

Can you let us know if you get the same behavior of the web player if you give this a shot on a different browser or in an incognito window?

Does it make any difference in the number of albums you see if you log out and run a search?

We'll be on the lookout for your reply!

I saw the same thing, too!  It is not good.  😢

May be the web player is using Web API to get all artist's albums

GET https://api.spotify.com/v1/artists/{id}/albums

and it is somehow using the optional query parameter limit of 50?

See https://developer.spotify.com/documentation/web-api/reference/artists/get-artists-albums/ for more info about the API

We are seeing the same problem in the web player, too!
See https://community.spotify.com/t5/Other-Partners-Web-Player-etc/Web-Player-Windows-Why-is-a-50-album-...

I tried it with different browser or in an incognito window but still getting the 50 albums per artist issue.
I am still getting the same issue If I log out and run the same search again.
Mihail

Hey folks,

Thanks for reaching out and bringing this to our attention.

This should now be fixed and the full discography should be visible for all artists, once logged in on the web player.

If your still experiencing the issue, please try following troubleshooting steps:

  • clear the cache and cookies of your browser
  • try private/incognito mode
  • try a different browser

Hope you find this useful. Keep us posted if you have any questions.

Thanks Mihail for the update.

Yes, in the web player I can see that the limit of 50 albums per artist is gone now BUT there is a new limit of 100 albums per artist. 😞

For example, search for artist "Frank Zappa" and you can see that in the web player only returns 100 albums.  On the Spotify app, it will returned 112 albums.

I've tried clearing cache and cookies, using incognito mode and different browser and still seeing the 100 albums limit.

Elena

Hey there @PorkChopper007,

Thank you for your post and for the explanation.

Can you try to log in with another account - such as a friend's or a family member's to see if the issue persists?

Also - we suggest that you try with another internet connection to see if that makes a difference.

Keep us posted. We'll have an eye out for your reply 🙂

Cheers!

Hi Elena,

Thanks for your reply.

I've asked a friend who is using his own account with a differnet internet connection and he was able to replicate the issue.  So it looks like there is a limit of 100 albums per artist for the web player.

Thanks!
