Android Auto: Sound stops playing after awhile

Device:

Nexus 6P and 2016 Volkswagen GTI

Operating System Version:

Android 6.0.1 and Android Auto 1.5.100945

Spotify Version:

 v4.7.0.878  (Paid subscription)

Description:

During some song skips or when the next song starts, there is no sound despite the player saying that it is playing and the progress bar is moving.

To reproduce:

  1. Plug phone into the car via USB to start Android Auto automatically.
  2. Play a Radio channel or play from a playlist
  3. You can either the let the songs play on its own or keep skipping songs. Eventually, you will reach a track where there is no sound, despite it showing that it is playing. This is random. Sometimes it could happen on the 2nd song; sometimes it could be the 10th song.
  4. From here on out, any song that you skip to or skip back to will have no sound despite it showing that it is playing.
  5. If left playing this way on its own, Android Auto will eventually disconnect or the infotainment system will restart. This will usually happen by the time the song ends.

Workaround:

 1. Unplug the phone and then plug back in to restart Android Auto.

2. Previously, i was able to switch to a different app like Google play music, play a song, and then skip back to Spotify and it would bring back the sound. This worked about 1-2 months ago, but no longer works now.

Additional information:

This issue does not happen with any other music app that i've ised, including Google Play Music and Amazon Prime music which leads me to believe that it is the Spotify app. This happen not only for streamed songs, but it also happens with songs that are cached/available offline.

Hey everybody!

Thanks for all your reports here. Our developers are aware and investigating this issue. While we don't have an exact timeline as to when it might be fixed, please make sure you're rocking the latest version of Spotify and Android Auto.

We'll update this thread once we have more info from the team.

In the meantime, we're going to be marking this thread as Closed for now.

Thanks.

I have an android and the same thing is happening with my app. The songs say they are playing, but no sound.

Hey folks!

We just wanted to pop in and say thanks for keeping us all in the loop.

While we don't know when this might be fixed, do make sure you always have the newest version of the Spotify app running. This is the best way to be certain you're getting our most recent fixes and new features.

We really appreciate your patience.

@Brendiggity, if this is a new issue for you can you try:

- A reinstall
- Removing or disabling any cache-clearing /battery-saving /force-quitting apps you might have on your device to see if this helps
- Turning off any Low Power /Power save modes you might have switched on
- If you use an SD card, does trying another help?

This is just so we're sure you're experiencing the same thing, however don't worry this issue is being looked into 🙂

Best,

/M

Hey @Ponsi-60!

Thanks for reaching out, I hope you don't mind our reply in English.

We are aware of this issue but just to make sure everyone is up-to-date. Can you try the steps @Melody posted above for us?

Thanks.

Just wanted to comment that there have been no issues for me in the past 2-3 weeks. I have tried forcing the issue with behavior which I though might cause it but it has not. Things greatly improved once I got a reliable cable.

Hi There,

I am new here, and having this problem since i've got my car, almost a YEAR now.. (2016 Seat Ibiza)
Spotify will play 1 or 2 songs correctly, the songs after that it will start playing, but there is no sound.

The radio (VW MIB II Unit) will then reboot within a minute, Android Auto reconnects and usually the sound is back. However, sometimes it will keep playing after that, sometimes it will happen again and i need to reconnect android auto again for it to sound to come back.

My setup:
Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 7.1.1.

Android Auto 2.2.710803

Spotify 8.4.0.539

So these are the same versions as xsmileyx posted on Friday and i can confirm the issue is still here!
I will wait another month, otherwise i'll have to swich to google play music, this issue has been making me cranky for over 11 months now, and i am reaching the point that it's enough.. I want to play music in my car! 🙂
