My Question or Issue

Hi there,

I recently updated the app (3 days ago) and it was working fine this morning - but this afternoon I tried opening the app and it crashed straight away!

I've tried everything - uninstalling, reinstalling, clearing the cache, clearing the data, turning my phone off and on again - but the closest I've come to anything is throwing my phone against a wall!!

Please help! 😞

Hey there folks!

We really appreciate your reports and patience while we were looking into this.

The initial issue reported in this thread should be fixed now so we'll be closing this Ongoing Issue as Fixed.

However, if you're having troubles, we'd suggest starting a new thread in the relevant Help board, making sure to include the affected device's details and all the troubleshooting steps you've tried so far. We'll be happy to lend a hand and look into this further.

Thanks again 🙂

Home screen bugged. Hold down on the app from your home screen and then choose one of your playlists and it should open.

My Question or Issue

I don't know why but everytime I Launch the Spotify app not even 5 seconds after I do it automatically shuts down and closes. I have tried uninstalling it and reinstalled it. I have cleared cache. I have done all the basic troubleshooting and it's tips. When I first install it it's only when I log into my account when it will shut down.

Hi, I am having the exact same problem.

Strangely, I can access my account, play songs, and alter settings if I access the app via the phone app settings. ie: phone settings>apps>spotify>settings badge.  That opens up my profile page in the app, and as long as I DO NOT press the home screen icon, spotify will stay open. As soon as I press the Home icon, it crashes.

I wonder if that gives you access while they figure it out, its super freaking frustrating.

I hope they fix it soon for us.

Hiya,

Thanks for the reply - all that comes up when I hold down the app from my home screen is the Remove/Uninstall option I'm afraid 😞 anything else I could try?

PotatoFarmer

Same here. Tried on multiple phones, too. If I hold the app button and go directly to search or start playing something, all good. As soon as I hit home screen (default destination when opening app) it crashes.

Glad to see it's not just me on my S10. Tried various suggestions and nada.  Very frustrating.

Okay, so I'm not sure how it's fixed itself, but it's back up and running!! (All on its own, go figure...)

If somehow it's down to you (whoever is reading this), thank you! ☺️

Same problem here: android phone app was working fine one moment, the next not. Not aware of any update during that time. Only happens on my LG V20 using android (8.0). No issues on other laptop or on my chromebook (which is using android) or my iphone.

Starts booting the app on my V20 then just returns to home screen. I read the suggestion of holding the app until it gives the option of opening a playlist - and this works! I can open Spotify using this work-around.

I reinstalled the app after uninstall, and then after a full clean install (deleting data and cache prior to uninstall), but none of this worked. I've looked at the community posts and will try other suggestions as I find them. Any suggestions from you folks?

LV V20 model vs995, android 8.0.0 (no updates since Oct 2018!), Spotify version 8.5.44.941

Hey @RandallJL051984,

Thanks for reaching out about this and welcome to the Community.

You mentioned you already tried reinstalling Spotify to tackle what you reported, but have you also tried a 'clean' reinstall?

If you haven't, check this Spotify Answer to find out how that works for your Samsung Galaxy and its operating system. It'll provide you with a brand-new as well the most up-to-date version of the app.

Let us know how you get on. We'll look out for your reply!

Status changed to: Under investigation

Hey there folks,

Thanks for reporting this here in the Community!

We've passed this on to our tech teams who will be investigating this.

If you're also experiencing the same issue where the Android app crashes on start-up, we'd first recommend trying the following:

  • Clean reinstall
  • Soft reset of your device
  • (for Samsung devices) Remove Spotify from any optimization in the Device Care app
  • If you have an SD card, check for any errors - you can find steps online from your card's manufacturer on how to do so

If these don't do the trick for you, make sure to add your +VOTE and let us know the following details:

  • The make and model of your device
  • OS (operating system) version
  • Exact app version (you can find this on your device's Settings > Apps > Spotify)
  • (for Samsung devices) Are you prompted to link Spotify to a Samsung account?
  • Do you have an SD card on your device?
  • What troubleshooting steps you've tried
  • Is happening on WiFi or mobile data, or both?
  • Does the app crash immediately after opening, during playback, or both?

We'll keep you up to speed here so make sure to subscribe to this thread, thanks!
