Apple Watch: Spotify Complication - not showing 'now playing'

After installing the new apple watch spotify app, I noticed the complication does not update. It just shows dashed lines, regardless of watch face.

i have tried (on both) rebooting, reinstalling, uninstalling -> rebooting -> reinstalling.

No luck. Am I the only one noticing this issue?

Hey there everyone,

This should be now fixed in the latest version of the iOS app available.

We'd recommend updating the app. If you're still having troubles, please make sure to perform a quick reinstall to make sure you're on that latest version available.

Thanks!

Wait so the complication isn’t supposed to display the currently playing song? That’s disappointing, that’s what I was expecting. Now it just says “tap to play music” though I’m playing spotify songs from the apple watch

First of all, thanks for fixing the issue! Seems to work now.

I have to agree with @vasquezgamer though. It is quite disapponting the complication only says “tap to play music”.

I'm sure the Spotify dev team would be capable to come up with an update that shows the song playing.

Even the inoffial app called "Apollo" which was taken down from the App Store just days after it was published had a complication which showed the name of the song and artist and even a green progress bar of the played song. And that was done by one developer only.

Come one  Spotify, your streaming service is great already and I think you can even improve the whole package!

Sincerely,

Pete

What’s even more interesting is that apple’s own apple music doesn’t show “now playing”, only “tap to play”. I wonder if this is a limitation of the sdk and not spotify.

vasquezgamer

Actually @BawkMcGraw Apple Music does show what's playing, but you have to start the song from the watch, not from the phone.  Spotify's on the other hand, won't display what's playing no matter where you start the song.

While this is listed as fixed - it is not. Issue continues on my Apple Watch 4 / iPhone XR.

Song name will display using Tidal or Apple Music but not with Spotify.

Thanks

The compilation is still only displaying 'tap to play music' on watchos 6 series 5 and using an iPhone xs. Why even provide an compilation like that if that is the only functionality it provides?

Even the 'Now playing' app of the Apple watch shows which song is playing but you cannot really control which song you want the play with that app.

Can we not get an improved complication to show what's playing? The Spotify complication is big and ugly, a ring for song progress, a ring for volume, a ring for anything and the ability to show what's playing where possible please.

Apple Music is calling.
