Artist Discography issues and releases out of order

I've been using Spotify for 4 years now and I have always been a big fan of it, but I have been having some issues with the app that have been upsetting me a bit. Mainly that when looking though and artists discography on the app, it does not organize the artists work by type (Single, Album, EP, etc.) and they are not organized chronologically. It becomes hard to find what you want to listen to and difficult to get into new artists that you find on the app with this structure. I use a Moto G6 and I asked my sister if she was experiencing that same problem on her iPhone, and she wasn't, so I think my version of the app might be the issue. If there is a way to fix this, please let me know.

Hey folks,

Thanks for your patience while we looked into this issue.

We’re happy to say that this should now be fixed for everyone! Just make sure your app is updated to the latest version.

If you're still having trouble, make sure to post a new thread in the relevant help board here.

Thanks!

Hey there @KevinDDillon

Thanks for reaching out here in the Community, and welcome 🙂

Would you mind letting us know if you've already tried performing a clean reinstall of the app? This is often an overlooked step, but it can be helpful to get rid of any cache that might be causing issues.

If this doesn't do the trick, could you let us know the exact Android version on your phone and the exact Spotify version you're currently running?

Keep us posted.

KevinDDillon

I have tried every variation of turning it off and on again, uninstalling and reinstalling, and logging out and logging in, so I think it's safe to say that won't do anything the 27th time I try it. I'm on a Moto G6 on version 8.6.34.749. Sorry if I'm coming off a bit rude, but I'm just frustrated and I haven't been getting proper help from Spotify tech support either. I just really want to know if there is a way to fix this problem.

Hey @KevinDDillon

Thanks for getting back to us.

We totally understand where you're coming from and would like to help you get this sorted out. In order to get to the root cause of the issue, we'll ask you to try a few more things.

If possible, could you ask a friend or a family member to log in to their personal account using your phone to see if they can replicate this behavior? This will help us see if the issue is related to your account.

Also, would you mind sending over a screenshot where we can see how the artist's discography looks from your end? You can attach it using the Insert Photos option in the post editor, just make sure to exclude any personal info from it.

We'll be on the lookout for your reply.

KevinDDillon

I tried to sign in with a dummy account that Spotify tech support gave me and the same thing was happening, so I don't think its my account. I have attached a screenshot of what the problem is, and it was a screen shot from when I was using the dummy account.

Hey @KevinDDillon,

Thanks for the reply and the screenshot.

On most Artist pages you should see their most popular singles and popular releases which would include singles, albums and other collaborations on the very top.

Once you scroll down, there should be a button labeled "discography"/ "see discography" depending on the language of your app. Once you click on that you should see their releases sorted by newest to oldest. This will include albums, singles, EPs, compilations etc. depending on what is included in the artist discography.

Currently this will appear as a large list with each section sorted by date. So Albums from newest to oldest, then compilations, remasters and everything else available. One selection of content will follow the previous, so this is why it might seem that the whole list is not in chronological order.

We've reached out to the teams backstage to check if this is the intended look on Mobile, as it indeed differs from what you'd see on your Desktop app for example. We'll update you here once we hear back from them 🙂

Note that this might not be the case for every artist, as it's the label manager who decide what info is uploaded to the platform.

You can always try the Desktop app or the Web player, since they'd offer more detailed information about artists.

Hope this helps. Don't hesitate to reach out again if you have questions.

Hey Alex, thank you for the reply, but I have some problems with your response. When I look at an artists page the work is not organized in chorological order (on Nine Inch Nails page specifically works from 1989 and 2018 are next to each other.) and I'm confused by your response that it is somehow the fault of the label, because this problem is the same no matter if the artist is on Third Man Records or Top Dawg Entertainment. Yes, the app works fine on my desktop, but I can't exactly take my laptop on a run, can I? If you look at the screenshot, you'll see at the top a list labeled "singles, albums and compilations" and before I was having these problems, singles would be under singles, albums would be under albums and compilations would be under compilations. I just want to know why everything is so **bleep** up and no one who works for Spotify can fix it and the only solution is to turn off the app and try again, but that doesn't work, it didn't work the first 50 times its not going to work now. I'm just frustrated that I can't seem to find someone who can fix this problem, and **bleep** that I'm now getting a bogus, "but its the labels fault" response when that is so clearly and obviously false. Please, please someone tell me what's wrong and how to fix it, because this morning, I was now trying to find my buddies podcast because they were doing something special for this summer and now I can't find it anywhere (and they are self published, there manager didn't screw up) and I'm so upset that a billion dollar app is making it impossible to support and be entertained by my friends.

P.S. Your Captcha is frustrating, too.

KevinDDillon

Wait, why did you censor those words? They weren't swear word by FCC guidelines, are you trying to make me seem angry and unreasonable so that you can justify ignoring my issue and let me deal with them on my own and make it so I can't get help because you can't? Now I'm starting to get mad.

olken2000

just chiming in to say I've been having this exact problem on the Android app for the past week, and it applies to all artists: when I click on an artist's discography it shows the words Albums, Singles, Compilations at the top of the screen and then everything is jumbled together beneath it, just like in KevinDDillon's screenshot.

I am having this same issue. I think everything is properly sorted, but they are not under the correct sections.

For the Gorillaz, everything is under the same section (Compilations). It is in the correct order - it data all of the albums in reverse chronologic order as expected - but then it runs directly into the items that should be under the singles header.

Hey folks,

Thanks for your posts in this thread.

We've reported this to the right teams to be looked into. In the meantime, if you haven't already, could you let us know the following info:

  • Make, model and OS version of your device.
  • Spotify version you're running.

We'll be on the lookout.
