Can't stream to Google devices

We're seeing reports that some users are unable to stream on their Google devices. This seems to happen on both the desktop & mobile app, as well as on different Google devices.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for bringing the issues with streaming on your Google devices to our attention!

This has been investigated by our tech folks & we have great news - this should now be fixed 🙂

Make sure to restart the app & your Google device, should you still experience issues. If the issue persists after completing these steps, however, just let us know.

Cheers!

My Question or Issue

I have a google home speaker and a google chromecast audio that I've setup with spotify connect to stream music to a marantz amplifier setup.

I was connected and listening this morning until the chromecast audio dropped out. I can still connect to the chromecast and the google home speaker, but when I hit play, nothing is playing and the playhead doesn't progress.

Playing directly from the desktop or the iPhone is working fine

What's might be going down here.

Nevermind it's back.

I have the same issue Here! With Iphone 11 with google home! it works for my boyfriend and we have the same phone and same google home

I have this issue too. The cast works as in that it's connecting and working visually. The playhead moves and the timestamp works, on the Chromecast TV. It is only "working" visually, like, it's looking normal. I can switch songs etc, but there's no audio. My speakers work for all other intents and purposes, tried and tested.

In the Google Home app, the Spotify Android app or Desktop client the playhead does not move. (While casting to the Chromecast)

  • Using Android app (Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra)
  • Trying to cast to both Chromecast and Google Home, from the Spotify app on my Android phone

  • Unable to play Desktop client ---> Chromecast via Connect
  • Unable to cast Web Player ---> Chromecast via Connect
  • I CAN play Android app ---> Desktop client via Connect
  • I CAN cast other things, like YouTube via Chrome Browser ---> Chromecast, no trouble

  • Every other app capable of casting sound or video to both devices work fine, no issues at all
  • The Spotify app and the Google Home app has been reinstalled
  • The Chromecast has been both rebooted and factory reset without success
  • Made sure all devices and apps are up to date.
  • Relinked Spotify to Google Home

All this testing leads me to the conclusion that the issue lies with the Spotify app for Chromecast, not with any Google product, since I am perfectly able to cast everything else the same way.

I would very much hope for a speedy fix, since casting Spotify to Chromecast is one of my main ways of playing music at home! Attached is some technical info on both my Google Devices if it's of any help.

Nevermind mine is broken again! 😥

It was back up about an hour or so ago and it's stuck again. Connected to chromecast but the playhead is stuck.

But plays fine when I am playing from the PC or iPhone itself.

Same here. All of my Google Nests respond to commands and tell me its playing my selection but nothing plays. Tried rebooting devices but still nothing. Works on my PC, phone and tablet. I can even cast to the nests but they won't work on their own. Just started this problem today. Worked fine up until this morning. Nothing posted on the Spotify site about the problem and there seems to be nowhere to post an inquiry there.

Hello,

I have this issue now as well.

I could play Spotify on my Google Home device yesterday but today I can’t anymore. When I say “Hey Google, play music” it will confirm that it will play Spotify but then nothing happens. When checking the Spotify app, I can see that a song is being played but it doesn’t show it is actually really playing as the minutes are not passing. If I change the device to my phone instead of Google Home then the sound is coming from my phone with no issues. Google Home plays YouTube with no problem. So it is an issue with Spotify. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, cleared the data, etc. Nothing works for me.
Please help! Thanks

I updated the Spotify app and it broke my connection to my Google Speakers. They will not play music from my device. My spouse’s phone has the non-updated app and it works fine. I can connect to the speakers and control the music via her “Jam” session. Something is wrong with the updated version of Spotify.
