Created a username but got numbers and letters

So I created a Spotify account for my little brother and it asked for a username. I created one for him but instead of it appeared a combination of numbers and letters. Is there any way to change this?

Hi @Jose_M, that account was created on Motorola g5 with Android 8.1. 

I don't want to create a new account, I want the one I have to work properly.

This is my issue as well.  I understand this is an ongoing issue.  But I chose the display name of Melrick when I signed up via the app, which it seemingly allowed me to do, but I've subsequently discovered there is already someone with that display name, so I'm not sure how this will be resolved.

Samsung S8 / Android, latest software version.

I chose Melrick, which is already taken, so I'd like to change it to Melrick72

I registered on my android phone, and it didn't give me the option to choose an username. I did not connect to facebook either. I've had this account for maybe half a year and I'm finally getting tired of it. My username is a string of random numbers and letters (zdf2r01wzc2zrrde67ojvraox). Hi, I also have the issue that the username was not created when I signed up for my account - there's just a random sequence of letters and numbers.
I'd like to have the same username for my account as I was able to set for community, please (Kristie-Ana).

I did not sign up with Facebook, but chose sign-up with an email address and entered the username in the data field "What should we call you". There was no error message, but the username was not assigned. Any help much appreciated.

Spotify team, you need to elaborate on the question what is the "custom display name" according to your support page here :

WHERE DO I DO THAT, i.e. where do I create that custom display name?

I created a Family account and input the username SSFrog1022 when I signed up.  It has been replaced by numbers / letters.  I have followed all posted instructions on how to change the display name but cannot find anywhere on my profile that references "display name."  I have been able to change my profile photo, but see no options to change the display name.  Oddly, when I attempted to post here, the system recognized the username SSFrog1022 and readily connected to my Spotify account.  Also, the Username I created for my father on his phone shows up just fine. I have the desktop app running on Windows 10, and on a Samsung G7 with the latest OS.  I do not want to create a new account - getting any tech set up for my parents is hard enough without having to do it twice.  This is a silly glitch and obviously one that has been going on for some time - I see posts about it from 2017.  Surely Spotify can come up with a better fix than forcing customers go thru the hassle of creating a new account and moving over everything they have created.

Yeah, all the more since Spotify says themselves (on the aforementioned help page) that you can create a "custom display name" !!!

Just finally tell us customers WHERE we can do that, dammit!
