[Desktop Mac] Crashing immediately after app opens

After a system reboot my Spotify client stopped working.

> Desktop, Mac

> macOS Sierra 10.12.6

> Spotify: 1.0.91.183.g259b84fa

Issue:

1. Click Spotify icon in Applications directory

2. Spotify flashes an empty black window for ~half a second and immediately crashes with no error message

> I tried deleting all the cached and supporting files like I've seen in several other threads.
> Tried reinstalling the application, but the issue still persists.

Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

Hey all,

Be sure to keep the app up-to-date. Try a clean reinstallation of the app if you're having issues and let us know if there is anything we can do.

Have a nice day!

Spotify will not open/launch. The icon bounces in the dock and then quits. I've tried the clean install about three times now and it still won't open. I've looked through the help pages, but it seems like a clean reinstall has worked for most people, so I thought I would post this as a new message since it didn't work for me.

Also, I found this article, https://community.spotify.com/t5/Ongoing-Issues/Spotify-Crashes-on-Startup/idc-p/2720109#M57280,that has a recommendation regarding Spotify Crashing on launch. It's for a newer version of MacOS and I tried following the recommendation, but that file doesn't exist on my Mac. It's super annoying. I've tried a clean install 5+ times, but that doesn't work either. I'm glad I'm not paying for premium since I wouldn't be able to use it for the majority of the week. I love Spotify so it's a bummer not being able to use it.

Bump, still having this issue...

Same exact issue. The command line work-around works for me though, so thanks for that.. although it won't load the 'Browse' tab. but the rest of the app works when opening through the command line

So frustrating, pretty unacceptable for a paid service...

Same here. Did a clean reinstall multiple times. Restarted my computer a dozen times. Won't even launch.

I have two possible options that may or may not work, but both worked for me so hopefully, they'll help anyone else that has this issue.

Option 1:

This may not work as a solution for everyone, but one of my very understanding IT guys (they are few and far between) decided the issue was that I needed to upgrade to High Sierra. That seems to have fixed it. I was also having some issues with Preview and it fixed that too. However, just as a warning, every time I close Adobe Illustrator (I have CS 5.5, which is ancient) it gives me the "Illustrator quit unexpectedly" message. Also, due to the version of Illustrator I'm running, I had also had to install an older version of Java. So if you have older software, you've been warned, it might not play nicely with High Sierra.

Option 2:

If you would rather not try that, you can download Spotify, go into your Applications folder. Once there, control-click (or right-click) on Spotify, click show package contents folder, and then open the Contents folder. After that, open the MacOS folder and double click on Spotify. That should launch a terminal window and eventually launch Spotify. I think you can copy and paste that file to your desktop and then use that to open Spotify, but I can't be sure that will work because the IT guy did several things and might have had to copy another file to the desktop to get it to work (to get me through until I had time to upgrade to High Sierra because he knew how terrible it would be to be without Spotify). I know he said that I would have to sign in every time I opened Spotify. He explained why, but that has been a week or so ago and I can't remember. Again, can't guarantee it will work, but he did get it running again (and then I upgraded a few hours later because I couldn't take the errors I was getting every time I closed Preview).

I've been having the same issue for a couple weeks now.. no acknowledgement of the issue from Spotify yet. I'm on the same version of MacOS and tried reinstalling several times as well. The only thing that works is the terminal workaround (right click spotify icon in Applications directory; "Inspect Package Contents" -> Contents -> MacOS -> Spotify). Someone @ Spotify please help with this issue!

Thanks both of you, the terminal did help me to actually open it, but this is obviously NOT a long term solution. Come on Spotify, get it together.
