[Desktop] "Can't Play Current Track" Error on Free

Thread934135 (and many others)

Description:

"Can't play current track" error being displayed on Spotify Free accounts due to HQ streaming not being automatically disabled in v0.9.14.13.

To reproduce:

  1. Drop from Spotify Premium to Free with HQ streaming enabled in the desktop client.
  2. In v0.9.14.13 the option will not be unselected automtically which prevents playback as you are no longer using a Premium account.

Workaround:

Untick "High Quality Streaming" in Edit/Spotify > Preferences > Playback and then fully restart Spotify (Windows: File > Exit | Mac: Spotify > Quit Spotify).

The fix doesn't work. High qualiy is unticked. I had this bug about a month or a couple of months before, then problem solved itself. Now I got it again. What do I pay for?

JUST DISABLE 'HIGH QUALITY STREAMING' UNDER PREFERENCES AND THIS PROBLEM WILL BE FIXED!

thank you ! x

Thanks for posting this fix, recently downgraded from the paid option, and this was driving me crazy.

Thank you 🙂

I'm a free user and have always been a free user, but I'm still getting this problem. The "High Quality Streaming" option is unchecked and I can't check it and uncheck it.

I also have this issue. Running on a MAC  0.9.15.27

Even efter disabling HQ mode and restarting.  Work on the web player..

I wanted to post this because I have never purchased premium. I am stlll using free, since I just started using it. Now I have the same problem, but when you are a free user you cant even tick "high quality streaming" yet this problem is still happening. the odd thing about it is if I hit the advance to next track button it works fine, but if I directly click on the song in my local file list to play it says "Can't Play the current track". However like I said my work around this issue since the solution shown here doesnt apply to me since HQ streaming was never clicked to begin with. I just click the song before the one I wanna hear and just advance the track and it works fine and keeps playing fine. If I click on the track directly though I get this error still. Nothing ive done will stop it either. Uninstall/reinstall playing with settings. It isnt broke completely, but it is kinda discouraging to keep me from wanting to buy premium. If the free version doesnt work properly, then im skeptical then about spending money.

Thanks,

Dm0

Thank you for the help! this worked 100% and I'm sure this will help anyone that is having the "CANT PLAY CURRENT TRACK" error. one thing that would help make this problem obsolete would be to make this not even happen in the first place when you have to downgrade from Premium. 🙂

The issue is not only present for free subscription accounts. I am on Premium and I have the same error. Switching to non high quality streaming solved the issue.
