Issues with Android and BMW ConnectedDrive

Hi,

A few weeks ago I switched from an iPhone to Android. And I was glad to see that the spotify app is now available in BMW ConnectedDrive for Android as well.

But the integration appears to be very buggy. I was wondering if anyone else is having these issues. It's also possible that these are caused by the BMW ConnectedDrive Android app and not the Spotify app.

  • The app crashes a lot. The Spotify app on iDrive will close, music stops playing and the app is no longer listed in the cars iDrive menu.
The app on the phone still appears to work because I can switch over to Bluetooth audio and it will continue to play.
As far as I found, the only way to start the Spotify ConnectedDrive app again is to force close both Spotify and ConnectedDrive on the phone and open them again.
  • The progress bar of the song (right below the album art) jumps all over the place. I have seen it work a few times, but most of the time it jumps back and forth, flickering, or runs to the end of the song and stays there while the song keeps playing.
  • The app reacts much slower then when running it form an iPhone. It often takes a long time to even render the buttons.

Is anyone else experiencing these issues?

Phone: OnePlus 5T (A5010)

Android version: Android 7.1.1

Spotify version: 8.4.32.617 armV7

Hey @johannesdr!

Right now, on Android devices, the Spotify integration only supports the 2016 BMW 7 series. However, we'll gladly pass your feedback about this on to the right team.

If anything else comes up, don't hesitate to give us a shout.

All the best.

MODS: Please read the whole thread before closing it. Thank you!

The Spotify integration with BMW's ConnectedDrive apps system needs some attention. While feature rich, Android users have three primary issues:

  1. The progress bar for the song jumps around while the song is being played
  2. The song list in the heads up display (HUD) and instrument cluster displays the current song as both the previous and current song. Attempting to change the song through this view results in a completely different song being chosen.
  3. Intermittent disconnects from the car

Since the issues are widespread, I'm going to make an effort to get the BMW community centralized in this thread to voice their thoughts, as well as provide examples and versions to the development team.

Other threads have been closed with the same canned response, so let me head this off:

  • As we mentioned in our previous post about BMW, due to Android OS phone manufacturer compatibility issues, the Spotify integration currently only works with the new 2016 BMW 7 Series.
  1. If the issue was actually with variations in Android phones, the make and model of the phone, not the car, would determine compatibility.
  2. Other ConnectedDrive apps would have this same issue if it was an Android problem, which doesn't seem to be the case.
  3. The navigation system in a 2017 BMW 7 series is the same as a 2016, so citing compatibility with only a single year doesn't make sense. Additionally, this exact same navigation system is shared with other models.
  4. Your own support page disagrees with this statement: Play from your Spotify app via Bluetooth on all vehicles with BMW ConnectedDrive. (emphasis mine, source: https://support.spotify.com/us/listen_everywhere/in_the_car/bmw-integration/)

Thanks Spotify team!

I'm also really not sure why the limitation for Spotify properly is only on "bluetooth Apps" compatible units.

To be honest, even though I love my M5, I don't love the fact that things like this don't work and will be looking keenly for a vehicle with Android Auto built in for the next car.

i fear even if Spotify listens to us (after all these years) it will be too late.

I for one am ditching BMW for Tesla Model 3 as it comes with integrated Spotify.

@Mikecom32 Thanks a lot for raising this! I have exactly the issues mentioned in my BMW (Series 4, F33)

Agreed on all fronts. I have resorted to using Android Auto instead.

i have a BMW i3 2017 model - nothing even registers or tries to work but my wifes iPhone with spotify works, but is buggy with playlists, album artwork. Its just **bleep**. BMW should do android auto/carplay and spotify should sort the app. Both equally to blame and both = me moving to Tidal and wont be touching BWM again until Android Auto and Carplay built in. Money talks.
