Issues with playing tunes outside of Liked Songs or playlists on the desktop app

Hey there,

We're aware of issues with playing songs outside of the Liked Songs collection or playlists.

This is being investigated.

Hi folks,

A few days have passed, so the latest version which includes the fix should now be available to everyone! You'll find more info on how to update the app in this article.

Once again thank you all for the collective effort in aiding us during the investigation. You're awesome!

Cheers!

I think you're spot on, Pathtracer. The community mods are doing what they can do, but the problem lies in the windows app itself. The odds of our issue superseding a feature request or planned buildout are slim, but one would hope that maybe they could've rolled it into one of the updates since the summer. I moved to another app when I couldn't ignore the feeling of yelling into the wind lol.

You may be on to something Luisiis, since my WMI repo does not really work. If I go to system information it says that WMI files may have been moved or missing.

However, resetting the repository did not fix the Spotify problem for me unfortunately.

@Luisiis @Yordan
Resetting the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Repository seems to have resolved the issue on my end. FYI, I did this with Spotify closed. I have restarted it several times and it continues to play songs that aren't in my library. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for sharing this @Luisiis! We've shared your findings with our internal teams as they may prove useful in developing a definite fix for this.

We've also forwarded all logs you folks have sent so far and no additional log files are needed. As always, we'll keep you posted here as soon as we have any new info to share, so stay tuned!

Thank you all for the continued assistance and contributions to solving this issue. You're awesome!

I tried for about a minute or two. The songs that I listened to that did work were Into the Unknown feat. Jack Jones from the Over the Garden Wall soundtrack and Sophie by the Altogether. I then tried to listen to four songs from the Hadestown soundtrack, which did not work, and then three ABBA songs, which also did not work.

Hello Everyone,

I was able to finally find a solution. To be clear, it is likely not an issue with the application itself, but rather an issue with how the Spotify application is leveraging WMI. After attempting to run the winmgmt /resetrepository as stated above, this did not work for me.

One simple way to tell to see if this issue is still occurring is to open MSINFO32.exe. If there is no information, or something along the lines of "not being able to access the WMI path", it's likely that the issue with Spotify is not resolved.

After running wmimgmt.mmc, right clicking on WMI Control (Local) and then selecting Properties I saw that there was a message along the lines of "Failed to initialize all required WMI classes".

Falling further down the Google rabbit-hole, I found the following list of commands on a Microsoft TechNet forum, re-registering the DLLs was able to solve my issue.

run the command prompt as an Administrator

cd C:\windows\system32\wbem

regsvr32 /s %systemroot%\system32\scecli.dll

regsvr32 /s %systemroot%\system32\userenv.dll

regsvr32 cimwin32.dll

mofcomp cimwin32.mof

mofcomp cimwin32.mfl

mofcomp rsop.mof

mofcomp rsop.mfl

for /f %s in ('dir /b /s *.dll') do regsvr32 /s %s

for /f %s in ('dir /b *.mof') do mofcomp %s

for /f %s in ('dir /b *.mfl') do mofcomp %s

regsvr32 wmisvc.dll

wmiprvse /regserver

Some of these may fail, and that is OK. After running these, restart the computer and then try to open MSINFO32.EXE. If that appears to open correctly, it's likely that this issue is solved.

Hopefully this helps someone.

Replying to let you know that THIS WORKED. Thank you!

Replying to say that MSINFO32.exe and Computer Management show nothing wrong with WMI on my machine, and the issue persists.

I followed the steps to reset the repository anyway, but that did not solve anything unfortunately.

crazy ive had this problem for like a month, and now I can't play the songs even after adding them to my playlist 😞
