My Question or Issue

I want to listen to my liked songs by title in alphabetical order, and I used to be able to do that. After being closed, the mobile app used to pick right back up with the last song I was on when I opened it to resume play. Some time ago, this changed. The last song I was on still pops back up, but the next song to play is not the alphabetical next song. The queue reverts back to date added. This is annoying as **bleep**! I just want it to play down the list and pick up where I left off when I reopen the app. Thoughts?

Hey folks,

Thank you for reporting this issue to us.

We just wanted to let you know that the right folks are looking into this.

We're not able to provide an exact timeline for a fix, but we'd recommend always keeping your Spotify app up to date to ensure you're on the latest version.

Cheers!

Spotify 1.1.18.611.g9cc9bdc9, Win 10, Premium.

I'm not sure if this is a (weird) feature or a bug. The behaviour makes no sense to me, so I'm reporting it:

These would be the steps to reproduce the issue:

  1. Go to "Liked Songs"
  2. Sort the list by title
  3. Sort the list by artist name (ascending).
  4. Make sure that "Shuffle" is disabled.
  5. Double click a random song title to start playing it.
  6. Click on "Queue". Notice that, as expected, you find a list that starts with the song you're currently listening to. As expected, "Next Up" are the songs ordered alphabetically by the name of the artist.
  7. Close Spotify.
  8. Open Spotify.
  9. Go to "Liked Songs"
  10. Double click on a random song title to start playing it.
  11. Click on "Queue". Notice that, counterintuitively, the order is now different than in (6). Even though "Liked Songs" is still sorted alphabetically by artist name, this time the queue does NOT consist of a list ordered alphabetically by the name of the artist. Rather, the order seems random which is unexpected given the fact that "Liked Songs" is still perfectly ordered.

Hey there @sbythegog

Thanks for posting - we’re here to help!

Start off by performing a clean reinstall of the Spotify app on the affected device. This will get you the latest app version with all necessary updates. Check out this help page on how to perform a clean reinstall depending on what device you're using.

If you still experience this after the clean reinstall, try disabling any power saving or data cleaning settings on your mobile device. We recommend this step since such features can often prevent the app from running at full capacity.

When you encounter this on a desktop, check the hosts file for entries that need to get removed. You can do this by following the steps here

Let us know how you get on! We'll be here in case you need any further help with this.

Thanks Ivan, I've tried what you suggested (clean reinstall, made sure the app has full permission to operate including running in the background, and I checked my desktop for host files (there were none). I still have the same issue. Also, my husband's mobile app is doing the same thing which leads me to think it's not a problem with just my mobile app.

Liked songs on both my mobile and desktop are still sorted by title, but when I close and reopen the mobile app, the queue reverts back to date added and populates accordingly.

10 months later and I'm having the same issue.

Have you found a fix?

Hey there @pson,

Thanks for keeping us in the loop here.

We've tried to replicate the situation with the same version of Spotify on Android, as well on the desktop app, but for us everything works as as expected in both apps. In your case, I can suggest you to log out and then to log back in, and even to do that twice in a row, as this triggers a refresh between the servers and your account and may help to resolve any possible issues with the cached memory. See if this will make things work as expected.

If the above doesn't help, then it's well worth doing a clean reinstall to get rid of any cached files that might be causing the trouble. This process is more thorough than the usual reinstall and has a few extra steps, so I recommend you to follow the linked guide and see the relevant steps for Android devices.

If you still happen to experience this issue after the clean reinstall, please do make an effort to send us a short video of the situation, as this will enable us to take a closer look of what exactly happens on your end and come back with a better advice for you.

Let us know how things work out, we'll be keeping an eye out for your reply.

I've switched phones since I first posted, so clean install and several logins have been made, and this thing is alive and kicking on the new phone.

If you think that this is something that can be captured on a video I get a feeling that you haven't actually understood the issue.

It would only show a song playing and then cut to another song playing.

The behavior is very random time wise, sometimes I can resume play after an hour with out problems but the next time it might go FUBAR after 45 seconds.

I don't really know what you are expecting me to capture.

I have the same issue. When I close the app and reopen it, it changes the queue order to "latest added". I'm using a Galaxy S20, therefore Android., but I also have this issue on the desktop app, on both Windows and Linux.

The bug is pretty simple to reproduce:

1. Disable Shuffle.

2. Sort the Liked Songs by "Album"

3. Play the first song, then go to Queue. Now you can see that everything works as intended.

4. Close the app.

5. Open the app and check the Queue. It is now ordered by "Date Added".

Reproducible on Android, Windows, and Linux. I think that's a good statistics 😄
