Lock screen/steering wheel controls not working

My Question or Issue

Since the last Spotify update, the lock screen buttons on my phone to pause or skip do not work. Neither do the bluetooth connected steering wheel buttons in my car. This is not limited to me - other phones in our house are having exactly the same issue (another S7 Oreo and an S9 Pie). I have deleted the app, restarted the phone, reinstalled the app and it's still the same. The lack of this function in the car means unwanted tracks cannot be skipped as it is illegal to touch a mobile phone while drivin - the new in car view is therefore useless. Please fix this bug!!!

Same here (Galaxy S9 - Australia).

Since the update, music controls appear on the lock screen but tapping them does absolutely nothing until I unlock the phone. Being able to just tap to change songs is a) easier and b) safer as I would not need to look down on my phone while walking etc

Bluetooth controls in my car also now don't work. Illegal to touch a phone while driving so using Spotify is a complete waste of time now.

And the songs randomly stop playing for no reason! Both if using with headphones and also through Bluetooth. 

Definitely eager for a solution to this ASAP. Someone has suggested swapping over to Google Play music as this is practically made for Android phones. Will give it a couple more days before I decide.

Same. s9 with all latest updates.

Additionally, keeps cutting out randomly and when screen locks/goes off. Extremely frustrating

Im getting the same issue on my note 8, bluetooth controls not working, songs just stopping

I have found that the notification controls also dont work, but if you (at least on my note 8 android 8), if i tap the v to bring it a bit bigger then the control button works as does my bluetooth control, so its something to do with the way the notification is being handled.

OK so if you long press on the notification go to details, and turn off "app notification badges" then the bluetooth control starts working again.

seems to continue working after the setting is turned back on.... needs testing to confirm this as a solution

I communicated with @SpotifyCares on Twitter, and was asked to uninstall as described at https://support.spotify.com/no/article/reinstallation-of-spotify/

This seems to have helped, I have half an hour of uninterrupted playback with working lockscreen and notification bar controls now. Not able to test with bluetooth in the car yet, but it looks good so far.
