My Question or Issue

I currently have "Show desktop notifications when the song changes" enabled in Settings on my Spotify Windows 10 app (ver 1.1.55.498.gf9a83c60-a). However, when songs change, no notification shows up. Is this a bug or is there something else that needs to be configured?

Hey folks,

Hey there @ricprd,

Thanks for reaching out to the Community and welcome!

As a first step, try logging out, restarting your PC, and logging back in. If that doesn't do the trick, make sure that notifications from Spotify are allowed in your PC's settings. If they are, it's worth running a clean reinstall of the app by following these steps. This can be helpful to get rid of any cached files that might be causing trouble. We also suggest downloading the app again from the Microsoft Store.

Let us know how it goes. We'll be on the lookout.

Hello, @CarlosE! Thanks for the reply.

I have tried reinstalling, restarting and even the Microsoft Store version and none of those steps made notifications work when songs change.

When I went to check whether notifications were allowed for Spotify on Windows settings, I noticed there isn't even an entry for it on the list. Could this be the cause? How can I add Spotify to the allowed apps list?

Hey @ricprd

Thanks for getting back to us.

Would you mind letting us know if you're able to see media keys overlay toggle?

A screenshot where we can take a better look at these settings from your end would be helpful too. You can attach it using the Insert Photos option in the post editor.

We'll keep an eye out for your reply.

Hey. @Novy!

You mean this overlay? It appears when I use the media keys to change the volume and skip tracks. However, it doesn't appear when the song changes by itself.

I've also taken some screenshots of my settings as you requested: one of notifications being enabled on Spotify and the other two of my Windows 10 notification settings (my OS is in Portuguese).

Status changed to: Need more info

Hey there folks,

Thanks for flagging this one with us!

If you're also having troubles seeing any notifications when the tracks change in the new look, please add your +VOTE here.

We'd also like the following details:

  • Your device and operating system version
  • Your exact Spotify version
  • Make sure notifications are enabled and working properly:
    • [Windows 10] the Notifications sidebar on Windows isn't on Focus Assist or any other mode that would snooze notifications
    • [MacOS] Spotify's relevant notifications are allowed on from the device's Settings > Notifications and you haven't switched Do Not Disturb
  • Any screenshots or screenrecordings of what's happening - just make sure that there's no private/sensitive info displayed.
  • The troubleshooting steps you've tried so far, like a clean reinstallation of the app.

Once we have the relevant details and votes gathered, we'll get this reported with the right teams.

If you're curious what this status means, make sure to check out this Spotify Answer.

We'll keep you updated here, thanks!

Hello, @Katerina

I have already done these steps and provided the info you asked. I'll clarify below:

  • Your device and operating system version Acer Aspire 3 Windows 10 1903
  • Your exact Spotify version ver 1.1.55.498.gf9a83c60-a
  • Make sure the Notifications sidebar on Windows isn't on Focus Assist or any other mode that would snooze notifications Focus Assist isn't on, I get notifications for other apps such as Chrome
  • Any screenshots or screenrecordings of what's happening - just make sure that there's no private/sensitive info displayed. They are in my post above
  • The troubleshooting steps you've tried so far, like a clean reinstallation of the app. I've already tried reinstalling Spotify and tried the Windows Store app version, neither worked

Cheers, thank you for re-sharing those @ricprd!

We'd like to gather information from additional users as it seems Mac desktop users might be affected too.

@jsannn and @patrickgilmour - it seems like you've added your +VOTE on this issue. If you're also experiencing this, could you include the details requested in the Status Update? This will help us report what's happening more accurately to the right teams.

Hi @Katerina ,

Notifications do not show on my mac as well.

  • macOS Big Sur 11.2.3.
  • Spotify version 1.1.56.595.g2d2da0de-a
  • Spotify does not exist in: Settings > Notifications
  • "Show desktop notifications when song changes" is on.
  • Tried reinstalling the app.

I am not seeing the overlay above either, not sure if it's available on mac.

Hallo @Katerina,

I do have the exact same problem.

OS: macOS Big Sur 11.2.3

Machine: Mac mini (Late 2018)

Spotify: 1.1.56.595.g2d2da0de-a

Spotify does not appear in Settings -> Notifications.

macOS notification settingsmacOS notification settings

Though, the new Big Sur Control Center does show the song with album cover. The media control in Control Center is working, so does the media control keys on my keyboard.

Spotify is just not showing a notification, when a song has changed.

I never had Spotify installed on this machine. I installed in a few days ago and notification never worked.

Though, the "show desktop notification" flag in Spotify settings is of course activated.

Any help appreciated 🙂

Thanks

Same exact problem as @Prostagma and @caldicot  on macOS 11.2.3 on a MacBook Pro M1 2020.

Notifications are enabled in Spotify preferences but the app does not show in the notification section of System Preferences, and the notification does not appear when the song changes.

Spotify version: 1.1.56.595.g2d2da0de-a
