Playback issues: Songs going silent on Android app

We've received reports from Android users that the progress bar of a song keeps moving but there's no sound coming out. When the app is restarted, the progress bar goes back to the point where the song went silent.

Some users noticed that the issue doesn't occur when the features below are toggled off:

  • Gapless playback - found in Settings > Playback
  • Equalizer - found in Settings > Audio Quality

Hey everyone,

In case you're experiencing this issue, make sure to give it a like and provide the following info (if you haven't already):

  • Does the app switch to the next song or is it stuck on the current one (with the timer still counting)?
  • The day, time and time zone this has occurred on
  • Your device's OS version
  • The version of Spotify you're running
  • Whether this occurs when playing from the mobile device directly or when connected to another device (Bluetooth, headphones, etc.)
  • The troubleshooting steps you've tried so far

Thanks! We'll pass the info on to our tech folks so they can look further into this. In the meantime, you can try the workaround of disabling Gapless playback and the Equalizer in the app's settings to see if that does the trick for you.

As always, rest assured we'll keep you posted here as soon as we have any new information to share, so Subscribe to the thread to stay tuned!

Don't think Spotify will ever fix this issue. However the cost of switching to a different streaming app is close to zero and there are an incredible amount of alternatives. Gave up of Spotify ever fixing this and have been enjoying bug free album listening on a different platform.

I fixed the issue by switching phone from a Sony Xperia 5 II to an Asus Zenfone 10. Only cost me 855 dollars or 790 euro. Haven't had any issues since. Such a cheap fix.

My spotify also experience silent even it is playing the bar is moving but there was no sound. Other apps are doing well to my phone. I did no change any settings to spotify app even to my phone. I tried to log in to my account on my friends samsung note and my spotify account works well. He tried to log in his account on my phone and there was no sound at all. I am using realme10+5g  os14. I even tried to turn off gapless and equalizer but still no good.

So what going happened next? my last use with spotify was 06/06 then I tried to use it again saturday morning it's not working at all.

Hey there,

I've the same issue with many devices. Regardless of the android mobile used:

  • Xperia 10 (android 10)
  • Xperia XA1 (android 8.0)
  • Xperia 1 III (android 13)

The issue persists.

I tried on many Bluetooth devices such as headphones:

  • WH-1000XM4
  • WF-1000XM4
  • WH-H910N

Hi-Fi systems:

  • Philips FX25/12 (Bluetooth)
  • Amazon Dot 4 (with Spotify Skill)

All of them with the exact same issue. Already tried a clean reinstall of the app, testing with a different network, hard reset devices and the smartphone, without any effects. It seems that Spotify skips the song correctly only when the song is playing directly on smartphone's speakers or on a jack plug.

I hope this description could help to resolve this issue! 😃

My Question or Issue:

When I listen to music sometimes the song just goes silent. The bar keeps moving but no sound is coming out. When I go back to the app and pause and play it returns to the position before it went silent.

I've uninstalled the app, checked for updates and cleared my cache. I've checked with different headphones and the same thing happens. I have no issue with sound from other apps. How do I stop this ?

Playback stops every few seconds almost a month now. Please fix this problem. Otherwise I'm stopping my subscription.

To resolve the issue of songs going silent on your Android app where the progress bar keeps moving but there's no sound, and it doesn't happen when Gapless playback or Equalizer are turned off, follow these steps:

1. Disable Gapless Playback and Equalizer

Since turning off these features resolves the issue, do the following to keep them disabled:

  • Gapless Playback:

    • Open the app and go to Settings.
    • Navigate to Playback.
    • Turn off Gapless Playback.
  • Equalizer:

    • Open the app and go to Settings.
    • Navigate to Audio Quality.
    • Turn off the Equalizer.

2. Clear Cache and Data

Clearing the app cache and data can resolve playback issues.

  • Clear Cache:

    • Go to Settings > Apps > Spotify > Storage.
    • Tap Clear Cache.
  • Clear Data:

    • Go to Settings > Apps > Spotify > Storage.
    • Tap Clear Data. (Note: This will log you out and reset the app settings.)

3. Reinstall the App

Reinstalling the app can fix potential issues with the app files.

  • Uninstall the app from your device.
  • Reinstall it from the Google Play Store.
  • Log back in and check if the issue persists.

4. Update the App

Ensure you are using the latest version of the app, as updates often contain bug fixes.

  • Open the Google Play Store.
  • Search for the app and check for updates.
  • Install any available updates.

5. Check for System Updates

Ensure your Android device is running the latest operating system.

  • Go to Settings > System > System Update.
  • Check for and install any available updates.

6. Adjust Audio Settings

Ensure there are no conflicting audio settings on your device.

  • Go to Settings > Sound or Audio.
  • Ensure there are no unusual settings or conflicting apps affecting playback.

I have the same issue. Long story short: I have an issue with Spotify on my Android TV - it produces no sound, while all other apps play sound pretty well. Factory reset the device, reinstalling Spotify from scratch, logging out and logging in - I have done this already multiple times, doesn't help.

The TV volume is on and all other Android apps (eg YouTube or TED) play sound well, I have an issue only with Spotify App.

If I open https://open.spotify.com on the TV, log in - it plays well. The issue is only with the Spotify Android app.

Disabling Gapless playback and the Equalizer in the app's settings - doesn't help too.

On all my other devices all works well: desktop computer, phone (Samsung Galaxy S22), another phone (Samsung Galaxy S9), Google Nest Hub Max v2. I have this issue only with my Android TV and Spotify.

The issue has been present for more than 3 years, I reported it to Spotify support already multiple times, with still no solution from Spotify support!

What I've seen for the last 3 months on the Android app: audio goes silent at times when my phone gets a notification, or when one song ends and another starts, and when one podcast ends and the next episode begins. In order to get audio working again, I have to fast forward ahead on any given song/podcast, then slide the status dot back to the start. I'm getting very tired of this and am about to put a stop on my premium subscription until this bothersome issue is RESOLVED. Phone is a Sony Xperia 1 III. App is consistently kept updated.
