Playback issues: Songs going silent on Android app

We've received reports from Android users that the progress bar of a song keeps moving but there's no sound coming out. When the app is restarted, the progress bar goes back to the point where the song went silent.

Some users noticed that the issue doesn't occur when the features below are toggled off:

  • Gapless playback - found in the app's Settings > Playback
  • Equalizer - also found in Settings > Playback

Hey folks,

After quite a bit of investigating, the teams at Spotify were not able to pinpoint one specific root cause for the behavior. Via all the helpful comments of people here we found a couple of remedies for this and namely toggling off:

  • Gapless playback - found in the app's Settings > Playback
  • Equalizer - also found in Settings > Playback

These have been reported back to the tech teams and they are aware of this, yet right now in this thread we are receiving inconsistent reports of whether this is fixed. We would like to bring more clarity for both users and our developers, so we will move the discussion to a new place in our Help boards to gather fresh insights.

Cheers,

Since my last post on (page 8, about 6 weeks ago) things have become much worse. Until a week ago I could actually for most times listen to spotify without it beeing interrupted, sometimes for hours actually. But something happened like 1-2 weeks ago (probably an update??) and now it becomes silent within less than a minute unless I keep the screen on. I wish I could cancel my subescribtion because now It's useless to me. But I'm on a family plan and my kids will not like that decision...

Hey there @TR4CKT0R

Thanks for reaching out about this and welcome to the Community!

Could you let us know if this happens with all playlists or only with a specific one? If it only happens with a specific playlist, could you send us its URI? We'll take a closer look.

On another note, would you mind checking if the same happens with a different internet connection? If you've been trying with WiFi, it'd be helpful if you could try with cellular. Additionally, we'd like to know if this only happens on your phone or on other devices as well.

Lastly, you mentioned that you've already reinstalled the app, but would you mind going through the steps of a clean reinstall, as it's more thorough than a normal one?

Keep us posted.

,

@d0ktorn Ever tried clearing cache from within Spotify? This solves the issue temporarily, couple of hours okay without stopping.

The_real_napster

Disabling the Equalizer seems to have solved the issue for me. I did also turn off gapless playback before, even though that did not fix the issue for me, but maybe the two together did.

Hey folks,

When the issue occurs, does the app switch to the next song or is it stuck on the current one (with the timer still counting)? Could you share a new screen recording which captures the behavior in action?

It's also worth trying @The_real_napster's suggestion of disabling the equalizer to see if that does the trick.

But why should I disable the EQ just to make the app work?

It's a paid for music app, and the EQ gets your music to sound how you like it.

Surely focus should be getting the app to work no? So far suggestions have been...

1. Delete your downloads.

2. Turn EQ off.

Sorry, but at this point is it time to conclude that "the app I pay to use simply doesn't work properly anymore"?

This is how it can look for me...

Same here. App looks totally normal, just no audio.

Hello, newcomer here with the same problem. My data:

  • Phone: Pixel 8 with Android 14
  • Spotify version: 8.9.26.592
  • Problem: same as already described by others. Happens when streaming over WiFi to a local speaker. Sound stops but Spotify's player keeps on counting on forever (over the song's original length). Hitting pause and then play restarts audio at the exact spot it had stopped, and the player goes back to displaying the correct minute and second.
  • Steps I've tried (without success): new fresh install (it was previously happening on a Pixel 5 with Android 14). New network router with wired connection to the speaker. Disabling battery optimization for Spotify. Disabling crossfade and volume normaliser. Clearing cache and downloads. Checking EQ (it was off).
  • Steps still to be tried: disabling gapless playback. I'll report back when tested.

I share everyone's frustration, but let's try to help the developers find the exact problem and fix it by providing the info they need. It seems like they're looking deeply into it now.

@sanchz Did you clear cache from within Spotify app or from app settings on Android? I have Pixel 7 pro which is not a major difference to Pixel 8 pro. If I clear cache from Android settings, it doesn't solve the issue.

You must clear cache from Spotify app settings, then your music will stream again (for about 2 hours to 3 days) without issues.
