Playback issues: Songs going silent on Android app

We've received reports from Android users that the progress bar of a song keeps moving but there's no sound coming out. When the app is restarted, the progress bar goes back to the point where the song went silent.

Some users noticed that the issue doesn't occur when the features below are toggled off:

  • Gapless playback - found in Settings > Playback
  • Equalizer - found in Settings > Audio Quality

Hey everyone,

In case you're experiencing this issue, make sure to give it a like and provide the following info (if you haven't already):

  • Does the app switch to the next song or is it stuck on the current one (with the timer still counting)?
  • The day, time and time zone this has occurred on
  • Your device's OS version
  • The version of Spotify you're running
  • Whether this occurs when playing from the mobile device directly or when connected to another device (Bluetooth, headphones, etc.)
  • The troubleshooting steps you've tried so far
  • A video showing how things look from your end when this issue happens

Thanks! We'll pass the info on to our tech folks so they can look further into this. In the meantime, you can try the workaround of disabling Gapless playback and the Equalizer in the app's settings to see if that does the trick for you.

As always, rest assured we'll keep you posted here as soon as we have any new information to share, so Subscribe to the thread to stay tuned!

I've also been having this issue as well on and off for a few months, noticed that it only happens when I start the playback from the background. So the app is either closed or has been in the background long enough to be killed. Then I start the app from the media notification in the task bar.

The workaround to fix this is to go to the app in the phone settings, Force Stop the app, and only start the app by tapping the app icon.

hi!

i have a realme c55 and It happens to me the same. When I start playing music It sounds for half a second and It mutes. The songs are playing but they cannot be listened. In my case It doesnt Matter that i put the app in background: It still doesnt work. I Hope It gets fixed as quick as possible.

Thank u

Anicz

I reset the app, restarted my phone, tried the work arounds mentioned in this post and it is still happening. I listen to a song for about a minute, then it stops playing but the bar still moves. After a few seconds the bar freezes. The only way to start playing again is to open and close the app.

I use a Samsung galaxy s8 phone. The spotify app is up to date. I have spotify family plan.

edit: got a new phone for unrelated reasons and its working fine. Not really a fix for others, but I dont need help anymore.

After doing all steps, and after fully deinstallation, i hear the soudn for 3 sec max and then spotify app go fully silence, this is trouble only on app on android, on this same device spotify works in web player, on computer it works all good, i have this problem only on phone app. Pls fix this fast as u can. I tried to play some songs in this silence, but the sound didn't appear even for a moment.

I was using Spotify this morning and it suddenly stopped playback. The progress bar was pulsing as if it were buffering. I advanced to the next song and it started playing but then did the same thing.

killed and restarted app. no change.
restarted device (Galaxy S23). No change.
Force Stopped app and cleared cache and data. no change.

QUIERO TENER UNA REPROCUCCIÓN CONTINUA COMO DISCOTECA COMO LO TIENE YOU TUBE. HAY ALGUNA MANERA DE LOGRARLO EN SPOTIFY O ME VAN A ESTAR PELOTEANDO DE UNA LADO A OTRO COMO LO ESTAN HACIENDO AHORA???? FAVOR RESPONDERME URGENTE PUES ESA MANERA DE REPRODUCIR DE YOU TUBE ES MUCHO MEJOR QUE LA DE SPOTIFY. PUEDEN HACER QUE LA REPROCUCCIÓN SEA CONTINUA COMO EN UNA DISCOTECA  Y NO QUE SE PARE UN SEGUNDO AL FINAL DE CADA CANCIÓN??? AGRADECERÍA ME DIERAN RESPUESTA A MI RECLAMO Y ME AYUDEN CON ESTE PROBLEMA PUES ME GUSTARÍA TENER LAS CANCIONES UNA DESPUÉS DE OTRA COMO EN DISCOTECA Y NO COMO AHORA QUE SE PARA UN SEGUNDO AL FINAL DE CADA CANCIÓN!!!

I think you might need to check your CAPS lock key, it appears to be broken.

For me, it seems to be just songs in my Liked songs. I can tap on them and it has the visual effect of being selected, but it does not start playing. On Android Auto, it says that it is retrieving the selected content but it never completes the request.

Unbelievable! An app to play music has troubles... playing music!

Going on for half a year now!

Support says "it's your phone!" -No, it isn't!

We have to disable 'features' to make it work.

And now the issues are 'merged': to what? To hide the fact that there are so many issues?

Still experiencing this issue here, I thought for a while it had gone away but still happens regularly lately on my Xperia 1 V. This and the fact that Storage doesn't stay on SD Card setting for downloaded files between app updates/phone restarts is really cheesing me off. Lazy company charging subscription fees for a sub par user experience.
