Playback issues: Songs going silent on Android app

We've received reports from Android users that the progress bar of a song keeps moving but there's no sound coming out. When the app is restarted, the progress bar goes back to the point where the song went silent.

Some users noticed that the issue doesn't occur when the features below are toggled off:

  • Gapless playback - found in the app's Settings > Playback
  • Equalizer - also found in Settings > Playback

Hey folks,

After quite a bit of investigating, the teams at Spotify were not able to pinpoint one specific root cause for the behavior. Via all the helpful comments of people here we found a couple of remedies for this and namely toggling off:

  • Gapless playback - found in the app's Settings > Playback
  • Equalizer - also found in Settings > Playback

These have been reported back to the tech teams and they are aware of this, yet right now in this thread we are receiving inconsistent reports of whether this is fixed. We would like to bring more clarity for both users and our developers, so we will move the discussion to a new place in our Help boards to gather fresh insights.

Cheers,

It's been happening repeatedly for two weeks at every hour of the day.
Timezone is CEST (Rome).
I also tried disabling that gap option that was mentioned in the post but
unfortunately it didn't work.

I wish I could add something relevant.

I was experiencing the symptoms regularly on my windows laptop connected by bluetooth to a Onkyo surround sound system.

After working well enough for over a year the described symptoms started to appear a progressively got worse in the last 4? months, after following this thread of others experiencing the issue on mobile devices 05-##-2024?.

Trial and error  reviled a few issues. Some, Spot EQualizer disable and Spot auto reconnect helped. Not a cure. Following the pattern I discovered some settings that were not the way they should have been. To my surprise, Onkyo receiver, Bluetooth and WiFi info was blank,No user name,No password! not by my hand and not easily reveled. Somehow they were deleted (update?). The two devices could not reconnect automatically. But sometimes re paired with my restarting and signing in each device. Not always.

In hind site when the connection was interrupted, By pauses, momentary interruptions, changing lists searching for other music, etc the connection would disconnect and could not reconnect without prompting. Onkyo sensed the disconnect and went to sleep once the cache ran out forgetting everything. Restoring the pairing info and automatic restart cured the issue. The EQ may have caused the gap or any other little stream interruption and the auto reconnect was not set or the pairing info was missing.

This Long version might be a place to look for your cure. Oh! 2 android phones were not effected at that same time.

my issue was a connection problem not able to reconnect for several reasons. In my laptop situation there are several connection buttons in the linkup Laptop feed, audio out choices bluetooth/headphone,choices BT choices Spot setting Onkyo settings any one could interupt the stream. Check login info and settings

Good luck and share your findings

My Question or Issue

It has been working perfectly for a good few months and then I got new headphones (wh-1000xm5) and it kept working until 1 day it just didn't have any sound and I paused and unpaused and it worked again but it kept on happening, I have my whole playlist download and my Spotify and my headphones fully updated. My phone is a Xiaomi 14 and it too, is fully updated.

I had that isse and also songs being skipped before ending, which is really weird.

Hi, I'm unfortunately experiencing this issue with my spotify 😞 it has been going on for a month at least, despite updating the app from the store the issue is still there, even tried deleting and installing again but with no success.

The song just goes silent and i see bar still moving, but do not hear anything.

I have premium plan and I haven't noticed this issue while using desktop, only on my mobile phone which is running Android 14, phone is POCO X5. Version of the app is 8.9.78.513

"Spot Tech" A passing thought,

I seam to have cured the problem in my l Windows laptop/Onkyo receiver. With adjustment to the settings. The issue never appeared in our 3 android cellphones . I'm still following the thread to watch for the cure .

After discovering  my issue was a disruption of connection and not reconnecting automatically I'm thinking a similar circumstance could occur with the cellphone & wireless connections.

Some providers may not be quick or able to reconnect dropped streaming connections. There may be some Common providers or plans.Cell service is sketchy in some areas, A interruption may not reconnect quickly or ever in a crowded system. The 3G-4G-5G systems may be a influence. It may be some details to Share with SPOT Tech who appear to be researching the problem. Our household is a frequent Spot user and the issue cure  would be great.  Some how Spot might want to do something to maintain a signal during a pause, changing lists , even changing cell towers, preventing a disconnect.

A test might might be to turn OFF the problem device WIFI and then cable connect it directly to the router system, No WIFI, to see if the issue continues. It might locate the disruption If the problem stops. And confirms that the problem is not wireless if it continues. I'm not sure how the  phone connections fit into the issue? or how to isolate it?

I hope this thought interests Spot Tech.

There has been a EQ adjustment in EDIT/PREFERENCES/SETTINGS/PLAYBACK/ EQ  it might be a adjustment there. Take a look if you haven't seen it yet, It has been blamed for other problems. OFF and 0 might be a place to start allowing your system to make their own adjustments.

Good luck with that.
