Playback issues: Songs going silent on Android app

We've received reports from Android users that the progress bar of a song keeps moving but there's no sound coming out. When the app is restarted, the progress bar goes back to the point where the song went silent.

 

Some users noticed that the issue doesn't occur when the features below are toggled off:

  • Gapless playback - found in Settings > Playback
  • Equalizer - found in Settings > Audio Quality

Hey everyone,

 

In case you're experiencing this issue, make sure to give it a like and provide the following info:

 

  • The day, time and time zone this has occurred on
  • Your device's OS version
  • The version of Spotify you're running
  • Does the app switch to the next song or is it stuck on the current one (with the timer still counting)?
  • Whether this occurs when playing from the mobile device directly or when connected to another device (Bluetooth, headphones, etc.)

If possible, feel free to include a video showing how things look from your end.

It's very frustrating when technology/internet becomes the only choice and it gets broken and there is no one to fix it. I've had different saved PWs and sign in names stop working, Capchas stuck in loops. New Devices requiring G👀le account to use, one returned device required a un advertises subscription. We could go back to mp3 players and CDs. AM/FM radio?My internet was down for a week, the Tech guy fixed it in 3 minutes and said "It could have been fixed from the office if I could get past the Robot on the phone."

I have this issue. The playback never starts when starting a new song even though the play time is ticking. I can almost always get the sound to start by skipping to the middle of the song (at least a minute or so, a few seconds doesn't work) but if I then return to the start of the song, it doesn't work.

Turning off gapless playback and equalizer has not helped.

Still facing this issue, it happens to me when I try to skip a song. It also happens when I want to skip through a song, to for example get to a certain part of the song, the audio goes silent. Have to restart the app so the songs could start playing again. I have this issue only when I'm listening on phone, doesn't matter if I have my headphones connected or not. This started for me recently, somewhere at the start of November. Three updates later, nothing has changed.

I tried turning off equaliser and gapless playback and it worked, but I want to keep the equaliser on.

When i play spotify in my android there is just no sound from mobile speakers.. the progress bar keeps moving, the song changes properly... I tried reinstalling the app restarting the phone, disbling gapless playback and etc.. but nothing worked.. 
My account works properly in spotify webplayer the issue is only in the app.. 
This issue started approx 2 weeks back..
My device is realme GT 6T, android 14

Spotify keeps going silent randomly! My device is google pixel 7a using android 15.

The app only has issues with Bluetooth speakers, my car, but not playing on the TV on the phone or through my Bluetooth earbuds that i bought a few days ago. I refuses to play audio through Bluetooth speakers. After uninstalling and reinstalling the app some audio comes through but then it stops and the bar keeps scrolling. None of the workarounds work for me, spotify app also seems to break all Bluetooth output to the devices because other apps have issues while spotify is installed and no issues after i delete it.

@MariaThanks! Sorry for the delay, today it is happening again (09-12-2024, 9:15 CET/Ams). Have equalizer and gapless playback turned off.

@Mariahad it just now again. At 7:41 CET playback suddenly stopped. I took out my phone, unlocked, and playback continued, so locked my phone. After half a minute or so, playback stopped again. The widget and app show as if something's still playing, but it isn't. The track indicator is already at the end of its bar, the timer stopped counting but the bar and play/pause button show as if still playing, even though the song hadn't finished yet. It does not do anything else until I skip to the next song (and back).

 

Currently on Spotify 8.9.98.488 on a Pixel 5 on Android 14. EQ and gapless playback turned off (happened with gapless playback turned on, too, though). Clearing the cache will work for a day or two, then the issue reappears once in a while. Playing with bluetooth on an AIAIAI TMA-2.

My device is having the same issue, but with different effects. The audio will occasionally pop in briefly, almost as if the song is scratching. I also only experience the problem when my phone screen is off; whenever my phone screen is on, (even just being on the lock screen), music starts playing again. This problem has persisted for over five months, and it is disheartening and annoying. Spotify worked fine before, so it is unfathomable that there is some issue.
