Playback issues: Songs going silent on Android app

We've received reports from Android users that the progress bar of a song keeps moving but there's no sound coming out. When the app is restarted, the progress bar goes back to the point where the song went silent.

Some users noticed that the issue doesn't occur when the features below are toggled off:

  • Gapless playback - found in Settings > Playback
  • Equalizer - found in Settings > Audio Quality

Hey everyone,

In case you're experiencing this issue, make sure to give it a like and provide the following info:

  • The day, time and time zone this has occurred on
  • Your device's OS version
  • The version of Spotify you're running
  • Does the app switch to the next song or is it stuck on the current one (with the timer still counting)?
  • Whether this occurs when playing from the mobile device directly or when connected to another device (Bluetooth, headphones, etc.)

If possible, feel free to include a video showing how things look from your end.

As always, rest assured we'll keep you posted here as soon as we have any new information to share, so Subscribe to the thread to stay tuned!

@Marion15 Plan B is using my brain to hear the songs when the tech goes to pot. No electricity, no internet. Old school tech like cd players on batteries would last you awhile. Yet, many songs old and new alike, aren't on cd. Record players would also be rendered useless. Sure, I can bash Spotty for their ways, but it is modern proof that too many companies rely on Wi-Fi and high speed internet providers too much to help make their imperfect product profitable. Bandaids don't help gaping wounds, yet programming lives like that.

In case you're experiencing this issue, make sure to give it a like and provide the following info (if you haven't already):

  • Does the app switch to the next song or is it stuck on the current one (with the timer still counting)?
    • Sticks on the current one
  • The day, time and time zone this has occurred on
    • Multiple days since roughly Christmas Day
  • Your device's OS version
    • Android Version 14 and 15 (updated)
  • The version of Spotify you're running
    • 9.0.2.459
  • Whether this occurs when playing from the mobile device directly or when connected to another device (Bluetooth, headphones, etc.)
    • Bluetooth headphones and Android Auto. Have not tested on device directly.
  • The troubleshooting steps you've tried so far
    • Restarted phone. Signed out of app and signed back in. Attempted Equalizer/Gapless playback work around, but they were never on in the first place.

I was having those issues in areas were i had plenty of coverage. at my
work . on the road. and home.

I wonder if someone with a different phone and or provider standing next to us would have the same issue??

It would be a interesting test but hard to set up without a Spot moble user close by. It would definately be a big clue to isolate the issue. I would gess it's a connection issue from my expirence. A delay in reconnecting because of my set up was my problem. There could be many other causes too.

Good Luck keep us informed.

Hello.
that sounds like it would be an interesting experiment. I started using
my app again a over the weekend, and it seems to be working normal now for
the free mode. if it keeps happening, I'll try to see about THE project .
For some reason, a specific track is always and suddenly being paused, despite good device, a valid account and perfectly fine internet access. This only happens with this track.
It's a meditation gong track that I have imported to my spotify account. So it starts with a gong, then has a 20min of silence, followed by another gong.
But the track stops after some 30sec of silence, unless if I extend display freeze to 30 minutes. In later case, it works.
I am using an Android device and when i play over Bluetooth and skip a track the play time shows it is playing but no sound comes. And when I pause and unpause the track it start to play. On Iphone when the same device is connected it works.

I select a playlist and it only plays one song then stops. When you check it still says playing but there's no sound. So I press pause and try to start again and it won't work but if you select another playlist it will play one song from there then do the same thing. Or it will do an advert then stop. I have restarted my device and no chance.

Device: Samsung Galaxy 23

Android Version: 14

One UI Version: 6.1

Spotify Version: 9.0.2.459

Using a Bluetooth device: Yes Bluetooth earphones by Sound core

WiFi/mobile data: Problem occurs on both

I have had same issue with Sony Xperia 10 IV for already 1 year.

I have done everything suggested. Emptied my phone, updating  Spotify, cleaning cache etc. Etc.

Very dissapointing to pay money for this app and reaching my pocket once 10min to click the music play slider to get a sound.

Awful really... Can I have money back or solution to this problem?

I also have this issue. It only happens when I'm driving, and seems to be related to my phones available connection, but I pay for premium and set myself to offline mode and it still happens.

Most recent occurrence was January 10, 2025 at 1:20 pm AST. App version 9.0.8.127 android version 15 Google pixel 7 pro.

Car acts like audio was paused, but song appears to still be playing in the app. Have to pause and un-pause to fix.

This issue is very frustrating and at times dangerous. I shouldn't have to fight with my phone to play music while I drive.
