Playback issues: Songs going silent on Android app

We've received reports from Android users that the progress bar of a song keeps moving but there's no sound coming out. When the app is restarted, the progress bar goes back to the point where the song went silent.

Some users noticed that the issue doesn't occur when the features below are toggled off:

  • Gapless playback - found in Settings > Playback
  • Equalizer - found in Settings > Audio Quality

Hey everyone,

In case you're experiencing this issue, make sure to give it a like and provide the following info:

  • The day, time and time zone this has occurred on
  • Your device's OS version
  • The version of Spotify you're running
  • Does the app switch to the next song or is it stuck on the current one (with the timer still counting)?
  • Whether this occurs when playing from the mobile device directly or when connected to another device (Bluetooth, headphones, etc.)

If possible, feel free to include a video showing how things look from your end.

As always, rest assured we'll keep you posted here as soon as we have any new information to share, so Subscribe to the thread to stay tuned!

This has been happening on my android app on my sony xperia V iii for the last two weeks before and after the most recent update.

Doctor_Tyranny1
it hasn't happened to me for a while. I wonder if maybe it might be by
the way the song was uploaded. because it seemed to do it certain music.

Note that i'm only posting the issue i had today but this is happening multiple times a week on 3 different networks and multiple devices (3 PC and 1 phone) and on android app as well as PC browsers (Chrome, Brave which is a chromium based browser, firefox).

  • The day, time and time zone this has occurred on
    • 22/04/2025 : 11:38 (FR time) song still playing while sound output cuts out on my PC, i was at work and network was ok.
  • Your device's OS version

  • The version of Spotify you're running
    • webplayer
  • Does the app switch to the next song or is it stuck on the current one (with the timer still counting)?
    • no skip, Timer still counting, song resumes after 5 to 10s
  • Whether this occurs when playing from the mobile device directly or when connected to another device (Bluetooth, headphones, etc.)
    • Seems to be happening on any type of device, Seinheiser USB headphones, Jabra Evolve 20, Jabra Evolve 65 in Bluetooth or USB-C (for the 65), AKG K701 direct connection on a Dragonfly dac, Sonos on my hifi system or even from my Dangbei Projector (Google TV with spotify app) outputing sound on a FIIO K11 linked to my hifi system...

These details are could be very helpful to the tech people looking for cures for the issue. Just announcing the problem, without descriptive details, doesn't offer much to work with except perhaps location.

I can only hope Spot has tech people looking for cures. I was wondering if the issue was from a specific country(s)? Although Spot could know from member sign in.  My discovery was the stream through a chain of several of my devices being interrupted and not able to reconnect once interrupted. Not everyone's issue. But a variation or some other interruption, security filters? could be something to search for. My PC doesn't like captchas. My filters keep it from functioning.

Hey folks, thanks for the reports!

To continue with the investigation, can you please send the details mentioned in the Status Update? This info will then be passed on to the tech team and it will help us look into this issue further.

@Life1024 - kudos for sending over your details! Just note that we're looking into playback issues on Android devices in this thread. As you mention this also happens on the Android app though, would you mind letting us know the requested info for that device as well?

We'll keep an eye out for your replies!

My Question or Issue

We drive a canyon several times a week. During the drive we go in and out of cell service many times. When we go in or out of service, my daughter has watched the app and Spotify switches from online to offline mode or back. (Which makes sense.)

When it switches, the playback goes silent for a second or two. It doesn't pause or skip. If you keep singing, the playback continues as if it was temporarily muted.

This is very annoying! All of the songs are downloaded. We have tried setting the app to offline mode, but this does not fix it. (It happens with both of our phones.)

We connect to the stereo via Bluetooth.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

That might be somewhat expected in fringe areas, Streams are not always instant connections. Sometimes skipping from one cell tower to another, like a phone. Your device tries to stay ahead of the music by storing a little ahead of the replay. Live feeds are nice but listening to a internally stored play list might ease the frustration while traveling through the canyon. If your phone has the storage space or external storage.

Hi, thanks for the reply. But we are only playing downloaded music. We are not streaming. The problem occurs in offline mode also.

Marion15

OH! I didn't understand that initially.

I wonder if the phone is trying to switch back and forth? Or the car device? You might try turning off the phone Wi-Fi and or Bluetooth, To just force recorded music? The auto, everything is great until they don't understand what to do.

Good luck with that.
