Playback issues: Songs going silent on Android app

We've received reports from Android users that the progress bar of a song keeps moving but there's no sound coming out. When the app is restarted, the progress bar goes back to the point where the song went silent.

Some users noticed that the issue doesn't occur when the features below are toggled off:

  • Gapless playback - found in the app's Settings > Playback
  • Equalizer - also found in Settings > Playback

Hey folks,

After quite a bit of investigating, the teams at Spotify were not able to pinpoint one specific root cause for the behavior. Via all the helpful comments of people here we found a couple of remedies for this and namely toggling off:

  • Gapless playback - found in the app's Settings > Playback
  • Equalizer - also found in Settings > Playback

These have been reported back to the tech teams and they are aware of this, yet right now in this thread we are receiving inconsistent reports of whether this is fixed. We would like to bring more clarity for both users and our developers, so we will move the discussion to a new place in our Help boards to gather fresh insights.

Getting sick of this crappy app. Every time I switch off of Spotify while playing music through my phone speakers the volume goes INSANELY quiet and I have to restart the app to get normal volume back. wth? Get your stuff together.

Hi, I have encountered an issue with Spotify on the Sony V 5 and android 14.

At the end of a song Spotify starts the next song but the sound stops. The progression bar keeps going. I encounter this issue over Bluetooth and cable. I already have uninstalled - reinstalled Spotify. The music is downloaded to the SD card.
I don't know what is happening and need help.

I tried the above solution but it didn’t work still just showing that it is playing the song with no sound. Tried everything at this point

Spotify 8.9.10.616 for Android just came out, I'm going to test it soon but if anyone experiences the same issue with that version, please post back here

Hi @ROBYER1,

I get the same issue on 8.9.10.616.

The issue still persists as of the latest patch.

This has been happening far longer than the initial report here.

The moderator response of blaming the end user while obstinately claiming that spotify is working just fine is laughable. Clearing your cache with an up to date version will fix everything eh?

I fixed it by cancelling my premium plan,, uninstalling the app and moving to apple music. 3 months or so of this has been more than enough.

I am using the updated Spotify version 8.9.10.616 and still having every other song going silent while Spotify is open in the foreground.

Version 8.9.10.616, still the same issue. It's 2nd Month at least, can this be fixed already?..

Another Sony Xperia 1 V user here and I think I've finally resolved the issue @ROBYER1

Now unfortunately I've taken a lot of steps to resolve so I can't be sure what the exact fix was. I'll just have to list what I've done and what finally fixed it.

I tried the basics first like clear cache, clear storage, uninstall reinstall, but no luck.

I then decided to go straight to completely reinstalling my phones operating system with the latest version by using the 'Xperia Companion' software and doing a full software repair. I'd been running the phone without any clean installs since I first got my pre-order handset so I figured worst case scenario it might not fix Spotify, but should clean the software up a bit.
Sadly on a fresh OS install the issue still occurs so if this helped fix it, it wasn't the entirety of the fix. I tolerated it a little longer until today I found this forum thread and tried a few more settings to fix.

In the Spotify app itself (after one more clear storage, and uninstall reinstall) under Playback I disabled 'Gapless' and 'Automix'

Then in my phone settings for the Spotify app I set the battery optimisation to unrestricted. It's after doing this that I noticed the issue stop entirely.

So to surmise the potential fixes in order of difficulty:
-Clear storage for Spotify app, uninstall then reinstall it
-In Spotify app under Playback, disable 'Gapless' and 'Automix'
-Find your battery optimisation settings for the app, picture attached, set to 'Unrestricted'

If none of the above resolve it may be that some files or settings are stuck on your device. You can try a factory reset of the operating system before then configuring the above settings.

It's now working great for me and also seems to have fixed some odd shuffle behaviour where it was repeating songs a lot / not really working like I'd expect

I already have done all this and the issue was happening, you might have just had a lucky streak of it not happening since the silent playback is rather intermittent
